For real. I've served with the BREN for some time (fortunately not anymore), even took a small arms instructor course and an armorer's course for it during that time.
It started out as complete garbage, got the living shit hotfixed out of it which pushed it into mediocre tier, but it's still absolutely not worth the price. New issues keep surfacing and it doesn't matter whether it's the rifles manufactured in 2012 or 2016.

Colt 14.5" heavy socom barrel, bcm a2x flash hider(pinned and welded by ccs), 6 position mil-spec receiver extension(buffer tube), Colt butt stock, matech buis, Cardinal upper receiver, smith enterprise bcg, New Frontier Armory alum lower

Any reason not to trade a barebones WASR for this AR?

I was looking for either a 14.5 or 20 inch, and this rifle seems very practical. He's going to substitute the BUIS for the carry handle, it also just has milspec carbine handguards on right now.

Difficult to say, but yes, there are companies that put out what should be VERY accurate barrels just by internet conventional wisdom, but are actually putting out paper tigers.

(Low quality SS barrels)

Then there are companies that put out Chrome lined barrels that should, by conventional logic, be less accurate than an SS barrel that end up outshooting them by a mile.

Take giddy for example: he had(s) a Noveske barrel that was generally regarded as high quality and had great specs, but it shot like garbage.

At 300 its a literal nonissue to shoot 55g ammo out of a 1/7

I think the negative effects only come out at MUCH farther, as overstabilization is IMO largely overblown in ARs
>>

The Specwars are great for the price, and the ASR mounting system is certainly one of the better ones on the market.

Does your dealer have a range where you can pay it some visits, or are you stuck waiting until next April to shoot it?

IIRC Aero has barrels made for them by Ballistic Advantage (also supplies Spikes and other companies).

While it prints worse groups for me at 100y, M855 past transonic deviates far less than M193 for me and is reasonably "combat" accurate (maybe 6 in 10 hits) at 750y out of the 16" gun.

No problem, I was shooting m193 and m855 at paper plates I set up out innnadesert just yesterday's it to around 300 yards from prone with an ACOG and a 1:7 Twist of my 16" Daniel Defense barrel.

On a related note, I realized something yesterday when I was shooting circular saw blades at 200 yards. M855 has the advantage, not in raw penetration, at that range m193 punches right through that steel too. The advantage is in ricochet lethality. If I were to bounce a round of m193 short of the target it would knock it down and leave peppered marks on it but if I bounced a round of m855 short the steel penetrator would stay intact and punch through the steel.

Left little triangular holes.

It's clear to me that it was a self defense shooting stemming from the Milo protests.

What they are not (yet) reporting is that Milo was there this morning, protestors tried to shut down the even (again) and when that flailed to stop the even from going forward they called in a bomb threat.

After that I speculate they were still uppity and tried attaching someone that was armed, got blasted and that is that.

What the media is reporting is 'OMG MASS PREE KILLING WHITE SUPREMIST MASSACRES BABBIES WITH MILITARY STYLE ASSAULT GUNS OMG EVERYTHING IS ON LOCK DOWN SHELTER IN PLACE GOVERNMENT PLEASE SAVE US NO BULLY!!1"

Yes but 750 yards is more than double the distance I used as an example. Once the round starts pushing that distance it's dumping a lot of engery and will feeling the effects of cross/head/and tail wind. If you have the ability to shoot that far, and the interest to shoot that far and are not using the right ammo for your twist rate then you should accept the results you get. But for 300m and in grain weight isn't as big of an issue.

Like I tell most people shooting that far is a humbling experience because you learn exactly where you need to improve as a shooter.

Do you own personal land that allows you to shoot that or do you have a range that long?

I can get Comp M2's for $290 all day long but outside of "I heard some had those" I haven't seen any evidence they were ever used on A4's.

Anyone know the dealer price on the TA31F or the updated one (RCO or something) that the Muhreens switched to?

My local range goes out to 1000y. Of course, the heavyweight high bc loads do far better than the various ball rounds, but you can have a lot of fun for cheaper with factory ammo launching shitty projectiles.

Unless we walk out and put clays on the berms, the smallest targets from 500y+ are 10" rounds so absolute razor's edge accuracy to just ring steel is really not a concern.

Paper at 50, 100, 250
Steel at 250, 500, 600, 750, 1000

The service rifle actually has an A2 upper (deflector+round FA+A2 delta ring), just with an A1 carry handle and a weird ass right side charging setup.
The lower is all kinds of fucked, too, no fencing but the vertical reinforcement that is usually just on the left side at the mag catch.

So just do whatever you like, you're not going to appease any autists unless you spend incredible amounts of money on the rifle.

I'm going to be ordering a handguard for my 8" pistol build in about a week. At the moment I'm looking at the 7" Geissele MK8, as I like the way it mounts to the barrel nut and the fact it comes with a gas block.

I've looked around for other rails that I like but haven't really come up with anything, I was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions? The slimmer, the better.

I was looking at a rail pretty similar to the NSR, it's a handguard sold by Rousch Sports. The only thing that turned me off was the fact that it doesn't have any anti-rotation mechanism, I don't know how necessary they are, but it kinda bothered me. Does the NSR have one, it doesn't look like it from the picture.

>>30138529
I didn't actually know about the sale until just after I ordered my barrel and few other things. If I would have noticed it a before I ordered that stuff, I would have been all over it.

NSR anti-rotation is done with a pin that locates in the receiver. Noveske branded MURs are drilled for it, or you can measure your upper yourself and drill it.

I suppose the chances of accidentally torquing off a 50ft/lb barrel nut with less than 1 inch of leverage makes anti-rotation measures kind of redundant.

As nice as the NSR looks, I feel like it's priced a bit too high for what it is, I guess you're paying for the Noveske name too.

I might try my luck with the Rousch Sports handguard, it looks quite similar to the NSR but it might be a piece of junk at $45.

I'm 50/50 with paying more for a nicer (although thicker) Geissele, or paying less for the slimmer (maybe junk) Rousch Sports handguard.

anyone know if removing an A2 FSB is not a permanent thing?

in other words, can i remove it and then re-install it later with no real problems? or are taper pinned sights a "one-time-thing" deal and once you remove them they can't be put back on?

i'm assuming as long as i keep the clocking of the taper pins right and keep them in order it should be okay?

another question, is leaving the A2 FSB uninstalled bad for an m4 gov't profile barrel? i know there are 2 huge grooves drilled thru the bottom of the barrel to hold it in place and without the taper pins in the holes would this encourage the barrel to "lobster bend" in the direction of the cuts over time? pic related: lobster cuts in a piece of pipe used to help create a custom bend.

obviously i know the barrel is not going to bend to this extreme but the same concept is in play here, to a much lesser degree.

anyone who actually has info about this or experience or both lemme know.

I bought a M&P sport 2 a while back, and one of the little things that always bugs the shit out of me is the fact that the bcg isn't smooth and always collects little fibers when I try to wipe oil off the exterior.

I bought a NiB bcg for my current build just for when I clean it, and I would do it again too, I can't comment on any other properties. Although cleaning it is much easier than a normal phosphated one.

>>
This shit look okay?
>>
>>30139141
yeah, you can install it back on as long as it's the same FSB you took off, you can't drill a new one

the cuts for the pins aren't an issue
they won't do anything to the integrity of the barrel.
>>
>>30139141
You can remove it and reinstall it later. The issue people run into is if they try to install a different fsb then you need to drill the barrel and new sight to match which usually means going to a straight pin instead of a taper pin.

As long as you hold onto the original sight that was on the barrel you are fine even with new pins.

As for the unsupported area of the previously pinned recesses, I have no idea. Enough people have gone low profile and freefloated barrels that previously had fsbs on them though over the past few decades I wouldn't worry.
>>
has anyone shot the imi 69 gr match rounds?
>>
>>30139141
Yes, as long as you're putting the same A2 back on it's able to be put back on. At least on the 2 I've taken off, pin order doesn't matter.

I've shot extensively with the taper pin divots not filled on a barrel that had an A2 removed, have had no issues with it. But then again it's not a select-fire rifle and I don't just dump hundreds of rounds mindlessly, so the barrel never gets cherry red.

Mechanical engineer reporting in- don't worry about it bending, if anything, there is LESS force acting to bend the barrel with the pins removed, since the pins themselves will be acting to pry open the hole when they are installed. in order for you to actually suffer permanent deformation of the barrel you'd need to repeatedly exceed ~70% of yield stress of AISI4140 which isn't even close to happening.

thanks bros, i'm still on the fence about whether i'll remove the A2 FSB, i really like barrel mounted sights for reliability, consistency, ease of sighting in reasons. Rail mounted sights are the norm these days but they just don't seem like the best solution.

any insight on that? rail vs barrel front sights?

>>30139258
thank you, this is more along what i was looking for. I forgot that the taper pins are actually pushing out on the cuts. i don't think there's less force though, when you consider the barrel whips when fired, those taper pins support that area during the whipping... unless you know something i don't? spill ur brains 2 me engineer guy.

All of my ARs have optics on them and bracing my rifles on barricades is far less intensive than the rigors of combat or even patrol so I don't really worry about my optics going down much less my irons being shifted.
>>
>>30139273
I've had both rail and barrel mounted sights.

Both work, and as long as you're not buying airshit-tier sights (or rails) you'll never have a problem.

I will say I generally prefer rail-mounted sights, since unless you're willing to drop almost a grand just on irons for one rifle to get the good clamp-on sight tower used for 600m/1000m prone shooting that goes at the very end of the barrel, you'll generally get more sight radius with a freefloat rail.

gotta keep in mind the EVERYTHING is flexible, even seemingly solid metal bits, and that simply bending a piece of metal (due to barrel whip, or a slight outward bulge during firing) will not damage it in any way provided that all strain remains in the elastic deformation range. a typical barrel will be designed so that you would never come close to hitting halfway to the point of plastic deformation (permanent damage) under normal conditions.

If you plan on smashing the front sight against the wall for fun until one of the two gives in, or if you want a clone build, stay with the A2 FSP.
Otherwise move on to FF and rail mounted folding BUIS.

>consistency

You won't see any difference.

>ease of sighting in

Some front BUIS like the PROs are actually easier to zero than the A2 FSP, with no tools required, and the rest is usually the same as the A2.

actually i have a carbine length system so i'm gaining a little sight radius keeping the A2. i don't care about the difference between the two though, but it's true that i'm actually losing radius when going to a rail mounted sight in my particular situation.

>>30139348
yeah but in the case of these lobster cuts, it is infinitely easier to bend it in one direction than the other. the bias being towards the cuts... so while taper pins are exerting a force on the barrel, they're pushing in the direction that is the most difficult to bend it. takes way more force to bend it backwards (away from the cuts) right? thanks for the link, i'll definitely read about that. elastic deformation range is definitely new stuff to me (terminologywise) and like you said everything has flex, as long as the flex doesn't supercede the EDR i'm okay. that's my concern though, with the cuts being there.... is the EDR much lower now. there's a lot less material and there's not one but TWO cuts there.

>>30139352
well what i meant about ease of sighting in, if your barrel isn't true you're going to have to do a lot of adjusting and it may be so bad that you have your windage almost maxed out, or your elevation...

another thing i've read, barrel mounted front sights help with barrel droop when they heat up? it just seems like a smarter system to put at least one of the sights on the barrel i think.

No, no nono. You can put a 15" handguard on a 14.5" barrel and gain nearly 9" of sight radius with a rail-mounted sight.

Pic related.
>>
>>30139444
Ah, but I didn't ask about Gen 1. I asked about the AN PVS 4. Which is Gen 2.
>>
>>30139423

I dunno, I've been wanting to get something in 5.56 with a 20 inch barrel length.

What's generally the next step after getting a stripped lower?
>>
>>30139422
Not saying there isn't better now (though I will say the Battle Grip is a step down IMO), but the Ergo Grip is pretty good.

Yeah, totally looks like a turd though. Especially after mine accumulated about 4 layers of various brown and tan paints.

Bought my suppressor today. Now I'm looking to acogs or other fixed/variable powers. Shot 200 yards with red dot and although it got the job done it wasn't ideal.

They're gonna fuck up.
They wear brown because they're a shit-tier company.

>>30139458
A2's are pretty cool to play with, especially if you're one of those RIFLE IS FINE guys. Otherwise, SPR's are the tits.

Next step would be to get a LPK and finish out the lower.

lower parts kit, buffer kit and stock
here's a pro tip
you can cheap the fuck out on everything except the BCG, barrel, and to some degree the handguard, and have a perfectly fine rifle.

yes, i'm not sure if you're aware maybe i didn't state it clearly but i'm keeping the carbine length handguards, at most i'll go to 9 or 9.5 inches. i don't like long ass honking rails. plus putting a sight out there at the end of the rail like that gives it way more possibility of being off due to flex on the handguard being amplified at the end there.

so to clarify, within a carbine length handguard setup. the A2 FSB resides AHEAD of the handguard in both cases. whether you've got the plain old handguards+cap or a 7" rail. the FSB is ahead of the end of the handguards.

so you can deduce what that means for sight radius when you put a rail-mounted front sight on the 7" handguard.

it's not much and i literally don't care about the 2 inches or so of lost radius desu but it's still fact. rail of same length will have less radius than A2 FSB.

You can really cheap out on the handguard, and as long as you're careful you'll be fine. The MOE, MOE-SL, and a few other cheap drop-in handguards are decent and there's about a dozen sub-$100 freefloats that are solid.
