Thinking about buying my first bolt action, any recommendations? I would like a Mosin, but they're no longer $50.

Just buckle up with money and save for a Remington 700, there are like 25 options you can get, just check Remington's website. Another good choice is the Browning X-Bolt

Remington 783 in .308. $360 out the door with a mounted scope.

These are all suitable.

+1 for the Tikka T3. Objectively better in quality control versus Remington 700 BDL ever since Cerebrus took Rem.
>>
>>30135339

These. I recommend the Savage if you're on a budget. It's the best bang for the buck. Tikka if you've got a little more cash on hand.

Buck up and buy a Savage Axis instead, or a good CZ. Remington QC is absolute garbage past 2010-2012
>>
>>30135362
And why not?
>>
>>30135368

Pretty much. I'd steer clear of Remington, and I own a 700 but it's an early 90's model. I love mine but I've heard/seen too many horror stories concerning them.

If I bought a new rifle right now it'd be the Tikka.

Cool paint job though. It's still an uninspired shit gun though.
>>
>>30134684
Dollar for Dollar, I've seen time and time again that Savage is the brand to get. esp the one that comes with the accu-trigger and (i wanna say) leopold/nikon glass and 3/4MOA guarantee
>>
>>30134684
Are you really short on cash and need a bolt gun today? Then get a Savage Axis.

Are you willing to save up a tiny bit and get something better?

Tikka t3 and never look back.

10 shots at 100, and as you can see I pulled one.

The center 5 measure .4 moa, the 6th on top bring it up to just under .7

Discount the 1 flyer from the pull and its a 9 shot 1 moa gun, or a half minute gun for 5 shots.

Lite barrels heat up, so thats where the dispersion started to open. But even at its worst it is a damn fine rifle.
>>
>>30138173

>>
Heres another 10 shot.

Now I noticed after this group that I had a click of windage on the scope I have, must have bumped the windage knob while reaching for ammo. That helps explain a little why it started to group to the right, plus again a hot barrel.

3 in the center, 7 on the right.

Center 3 measure .570" so its pretty muh a .3moa 3 shot. The other 7 shots string 1.130 making them a .8moa string.

Tightest 5 on the right settle that number back down to around .4 moa.

For a 1k total investment (gun, scope, rings, bipod) thats really nice.
>>
>>30134684
check your local gunstores if they have an older Remington 700 lying around

if you have to buy a new rifle:
Savage Axis
Ruger American
Marlin X7

those are the super budget ones

Tikka T3x

Since you don't have a T3, the T3x addresses most of T3 owner complaints.
>steel recoil lugs now
>steel bolt shroud
>more foam in stock
>better recoil pad
>more screw holes for a rail
>bigger ejection port

It looks like it's maybe $50~ more than T3 in street prices.

Made on Sako tooling.
Rave reviews.
$500~ mid range bolt
Guaranteed 1 moa out of the box
Growing aftermarket support
Testimony on buttery smooth bolt and crisp trigger

>>
>>30134684
It really depends what you want it for. A ruger american/savage axis is perfectly fine for a plinker rifle, get a .308 if you already have an ar. If you want something to shoot further than any of your other guns then you need to consider exactly how far that is and how hard you want to hit when you get there. 7mm-08, 300 win mag, 6.5 creedmoor, etc, are all great for that kind of application. Spend $2000 at bare minimum and get good glass and a well bedded gun. I can talk a little more if that's your groove.

>>
>>30141899
they're not really issues, the aluminum lugs were a problem for "some" people who had them break, but most people didn't have that problem.
But like most firearms with some very rare but alarming issues, people like to have a peace of mind and just upgrade those parts.

The T3X is pretty much customer feedback edition that they're probably going to be running from now on.
It's still new, so you might not find it so widely available yet.
>>
Im having a hard time finding a bolt action that suits my needs. Heres my list..

Under 1500$
Ability to be fired continuous (think "battle ready" bolt action)
30-06 minimum
Not military surplus (trying to retire a mauser)
Accurate enough to hammer human sized steel targets @ 1km
Deer hunting rifles are not built robust enough and their pencil dick barrels get hot enough to melt their plastic shit stocks in 20 rounds (thanks ruger) so what are my options? Savages with heavy barrels? Massaged over older 700s?
Are my expectations overdoing it for my budget?

hog hunter looks pretty good, 20 inch barrel, meant to be decently accurate, they come in 30-06 and .308 with a decently thick barrel.

Apparently the short barrel helps reduce amount of spread you get from the barrel heating up, which sounds pretty attractive. Cheap too. I'm leaning towards one as my first 308

No, get the idea of Remington out of your head right now. Remingtons are straight up hot garbage shit and should not even be considered with how poorly they are made. Literally the only reason to buy a Remington 700 is because of their large amounts of after market parts if you intend on keeping the receiver and throwing everything else in the bin to build your own custom rifle

Howa 1500 is a similar design to the r700. Only they put much more effort into the quality of their product, i reccomend them, or a tikka t3
>>
>>30135505
>only acceptable options
>not including the howa 1500 which is the same thing as the vanguard

>>30137724
Commifornia here, first gun is a 10/22 but think about getting mossberg mvp in .223/5.56

They relatively cheap?

The mags seem attractive. I mean AR mags ain't going anywhere
>>
>>30142964

You're gunna want something like a 7mm-08 or 7mm mag then. Tikka t3x comes in 7mm-08 and it's awesome. Don't cheap out on the glass, you kike, and you'll be able to shoot well past 1000 meters.
>>
>>30138235

I have a Savage 111 Long Range Hunter in .300 win mag. I'm trying to sell it to get a .308, and I'm leaning towards a R700 or something similar. I want a .308 because it's much more economical than a .300, and there aren't any real long ranges around my area. I'd like a R700, because I like the thought of saving up and getting an AICS stock for it. Is cashing out on the .300 a good idea?
>>
>>30142875
Magnum calibers with aluminum recoil lugs dont work too well. After time it stress cracks the aluminum. Dont know of anyone having problems with anything smaller.
>>
>>30142964
Tikka varmint or ctr.
Both have heavier barrels.
>>
>>30145258
Yes it's worth it 10 fold .300wm is retarded to get into if you don't reload and hunt elk.
>>
>>30143903
Having a shorter barrel has little to no effect on heat stringing, it's the thickness of the barrel that makes the difference.
Shorter barrels are usually thicker.
>>

>>
>>30144248

>>
>>30144248
How about a 721/722? I would argue that they are a better made action because the machinery wasn't worn out when they were built, and they are basically the same action as a 700. They will fit in a 700 stock. If OP is going to restock/rebarrel anyway it could be a decent choice.
>>
>>30146385
Remington 40 years ago =\= Cerburus/freedom group Remington.
If you like extra expense and headache just to have an antique action then go right ahead.
>>
>>30146099
>he thinks Remington is still good
>>
>>30146921
No extra expense if, as I said, OP is going to rebarrel and restock anyway. There is only one possible headache in that case as well. And they are as good as or better than any 700 out there. I've shot enough 1000 yards with both to be able to say that, my friend. But then again, I'm probably a Fudd.
>>
>>30145758
Shorter barrel have less vibratory whip, and become become stiffer as the weight is not further away from the rifle.

So you are partially correct. It doesnt affect HEAT dissipation, but does increase rigidity.
>>
>>30134684
Just gonna throw in a plug for the Ruger M77 here...

Best value on a true Mauser-style action you are likely to find. Of course, there's nothing really "wrong" with a push-feed, but personally I've got a fetish for Mauser descendants.

how is it for accuracy? I figure the gun will be capable of better accuracy than I can delivery to it for a long time but from what I've read it's good enough for hunting.

What's the longest range you shoot it at? They are darn sexy.

Different kettle of fish, but those CZ 527's in 7.62x39 look pretty awesome. There's a serbian Zastava rifle quite similar for a lot cheaper, and apparently Howa are bringing out a 1500 chambered in the intermediate russian round. Perhaps similar concept to these .300 Blackout bolt actions or like a worse version of the 30-30?

>>30146099
From many many reports on their terrible quality control. And seeing in person some issues like crooked barrels, mounting holes drilled in at angles, bolts too tight to close, bolts incredibly sloppy, horrible gritty actions and triggers etc.

Why buy one when you can get so many other rifles which are cheaper and perfect out of the box. The only ones buying remington 700's are people intending on building on the action, new shooters who know the remington name and assume they must be good without actually knowing anything. Or dumbass fudds with retarded brand loyalty
