Now I know that battleships are obsolete, and that missiles outmatch canon salvos, despite not being much more expensive

But would there be a way to put the Iowa class back into service? What modifications would be necessary? Railgun? Remove the turrets altogether and turn it into some sort if Kirov-ish ship?
>>

Cant you go one fucking week without posting this shit?

See who's mad
This is /k/
Previous thread, everybody thought it was to be recommissioned in its current state

Now I know that gliders are obsolete, and that helicopters outmatch balsawood, despite not being much more expensive

But would there be a way to put the Horsa class back into service? What modifications would be necessary? Engines? Remove the wings altogether and turn it into some sort if helicopter?

>Back in service
Ok, here are my suggestions:
1) Place it in active service as a museum ship. Somewhere nice. Like on land
2) Put it back in service as a target ship. Let the Navy have some fun
3) Serve Neptune as a new majestic fish reef.
>>
No.
The cost of refitting the Iowa in the ways necessary to turn it into a viable weapons platform would cost more than just making a new ship.

Furthermore, to do so wouldn't even produce a decent vessel relative to modern designs, or if it could it would strip it down past the point where it's even be recognizable as the Iowa anymore, thus defeating the entire point of your poorly-thought-out idea.

Now please stop posting this thread.

Hahaha

It can be re-commissioned as bolts, serving on a Burke or something
>>
>>30122452
Just leave it alone, fucking thing has been chopped about enough as it is.
Just rest Her up somewhere, restore her to her 1940's layout then have it as a museum ship.
>>
>>30122452
NO!
>>
It's a dated platform. Battleships today make little sense since their roles can be easily taken over by cruisers and destroyers without the disadvantage of being a fuckhuge target
>>
>>
But...but,,,ACDC can play Thunderstruck, and a gang of 70 year old men can crew it.

And we can drop the anchor, and totally drift that bitch...and shoot the aliens.
>>
>>30122753
OP specified about it being upgraded

It would probably be expensive, but a battlecruiser conversion of the Iowa class would have been awesome
>>
>>30122896
>add modular armor panels
>all the CIWS
>add some railguns
>add some more railguns
>add vertical launch missiles for cool

It could work.
>>
>>30122452

No. Quit asking. The Zumwalt is going to take its place once we equip them with railguns.
>>
>>30122452
Lets just assume that for some reason, they're reactivated, what major overhauls would be necessary to modernize them?

First off, the guns are obsolete.

Not because flinging 2000kg shells is obsolete, but because:

1. There are ZERO spare barrels around anymore
2. Because of 1, new barrels would have to be manufactured
3. The tooling, expertise and training for making said barrels is long gone and the USN would now want barrels that can handle 700+ shots before replacement.
4. Now repeat 1 and 2 with the ammunition. Nobody makes 16" shells anymore. In the 80s they were using shells manufactured for Korea and using up those stocks.
5. Repeat 1 and 2 for powder.

Next up:

Power generation!

At this point, you pretty much have to gut the vessel and replace the entire powerplant due to age and lack of spare parts.

Hulls:

Ignore maintenance issues and so forth for now, just adding a standard self degaussing system alone is impractical and difficult due to the armor and its thickness..

Every bit of electronics needs swapped out more or less

At this point, you're better off just building an entirely new ship to meet the demands instead of upgrading an ancient tube that will only be a fraction as capable as a new vessel.

Or, in OP's case, just post the same shit tread again in a few days
>>
>>30123189
How about not having guns at all?

They faced a huge overhaul in the 80's

Though powerplant is a problem. Unless they can replace it at an acceptable cost, it doesn't seem likely
>>
>TOW missle could blow a large hole in its armor

Idk.

Isn't Zumwalt-clasd sort of like a successor to the Iowa-class, despite being different classes?

>>
>>30122452

The biggest problem is the engines and boilers. Those are worn out and has been outdated since the 50s. To make the Iowa usable you would need to replace the engines.

And those are huge as fuck and replacing them would mean that the whole superstructure of the ship has to be taken down and rebuilt. At that cost you might aswell just build a new ship.

Week? More like 2 days.

>>30122452
At this point it's not even a fucking horse, it's not even a puddle of blood and guts, it's just a rancid hole in the ground that we've beaten and just keep digging deeper.

I would rather at this point the US decided that they were not needed even as museum ships and send the fuckers to the bottom of the ocean just to fucking stop this retardation that keeps popping up consistently no matter how many times it is proven to be retarded with math, structural testing, previous precedents, etc.

>>
>>30124049
Zumwalt does it just as well if not better, even with AGS in stead of those railguns, and has more to offer to everything else in the theater. SPY-3 + three MQ-8s + LCS escorts are no fucking joke when it comes to high volume search, it's an info gathering monster when it's not wrecking fucking anything that has the gall to challenge.
>>
>>30122452
Replace the diesel with nuclear power, replace canons with missile silos and make it a propaganda ship
>>
>>30123920
Sort of. It takes over the role of naval gunfire support, which, to be honest, isn't all too important, but useful none the less. But Zumwalt makes contributions to the greater picture that oldschool BBs only sort of touched on with spotter planes. Between SPY-3 radar, her Firescout drones, and her LCS escorts, a Zumwalt SAG is a huge info gathering tool. You zend it ahead of the main taskforce, and it secures littoral waters and keeps watch while beating the shit out of juicy inland targets.

The ships were in pretty bad shape even after the overhaul.
