Okinawans, at least the independence proponents, do not want to belong to China but to become independent and neutral again. And for this, they want to nurture good relationship to China as well as to Japan and the US. The first step is of course to not to be a military base anymore.
CHina actually doenst want Okinawa either. They do look at their independence movement quite sympathetic, but so far there has been no official voice supporting them - as oppossed to masses of Japanese official voice supporting the split off of Tibet.
