Don't try to fix what's not broken.
>>

if that were true we'd still be using dogshit like the BAR or the 1911
>>
>>30116104
we are still using the 1911.
>>
>>30116104
the BAR was inappropriate for changing doctrines as better metallurgy was developed and the fashion went to intermediate rounds.

there is still use for .30 and .50 cal semi-portable machineguns

and yes the 1911 is still used in many militaries

Been there, done that.

Hint: It's shit.

You are using the great grand-son of the BAR, since Minimi and MAG have the BAR gas system and action flipped upside down and mated to the belt feed of the MG 42.

When was the last time new fiddy cal MGs rolled off a production line? Obviously they arent using the same ones which were around in WW1 and WW2 but how old worn/new and neat are the current ones?
>>
>>30116282
the last ones were made in the late 1940s

at the end of WW2 the factories had made almost five hundred million M2s, so there was no need to ever make any more

It fires a full caliber in full auto.
>>
>>30116230
Not a belt fed
>>
>>30116357
you are thinking of a battle rifle, which can have select fire. a LMG can fire intermediate or full cartridges but they are designed for sustained fire.

if that weren't the case, what would you call the m249, or any other machineguns that fires 5.56 (or 5.45 or 7.62x39)
>>
>>30116298
>>30116322

By the end of the war about 2 million had been made.
>>
>>30116368
>belt fed AR

Might as well design a new gun from the ground up.

AR-15 platform simply isn't designed to fulfill an LMG roll. You may as well convert volkswagen beetles into dumptrucks.

I called it an LMG because it's retarded heavy. I thought of battle rifle for a second, but remembered most battle rifles aren't heavy enough to be something to hold onto in case of a tornado.

So, BAR is an old, fat battle rifle. Woo.

You're just jealous because a mormon gun nerd got more poon than you ever have.
>>
>>30116430
it's quite a unique case. it sort of filled the role of a squad automatic rifle, which would later be filled by an LMG.

it's actual capabilities are akin to an automatic battle rifle like a G3, but it was far more heavy than that kind of rifle as you said.

it doesn't really fit in any single modern classification based on its qualities, intended use, or actual use.
>>
>>30116540
Woah there m6 did you just call Johnny Brownnote a nerd? Better sleep with one eye open cunt.
>>
>>30116040
The AR15 would make a terrible GPMG or HMG. The primary problem would be airflow. The action is tightly sealed and fires from a closed bolt. Open bolt AR's exist but the action still only has one hole for air to ingress. The action also doesn't lend itself to belt feed either.
>>
>>30116424
Its not a lot compared to the 500 mil figure that the other anon gave me.

browning was trying to develop a new type of automatic with his bar, but was off the mark in several keep point. He was pretty close in developing the first AR but the result was too heavy.

the BAR was basically too "light" for suppressive fire but still too "heavy" for the common infantry.

I'm sorry, those things are terrible. They jam constantly until they get broken in and the "breaking in" involves just battering parts together until everything fits together reasonably.

The marines tried.

M27 ifantry automatic rifle based on the M4 but piston instead of direct impingement.

It would have had drum mags and been a 900 rpm 1 MOA select fire gun that could be a marksman'rifle or squad automatic weapon on demand.

The former commandant general amos (us grunts called him heinious anus cuz he was a fuckin pog bitch who bowed and scraped to obama) declared that a SAW cant be a SAW without linked belts of ammo, so we recieved a few thousand of em with standard 30 round mags and they ended up never replacing our aging and worn out M249 SAWs.

I was issued one in afghan. It was literally the best weapon the military ever gave me. Fuck general amos. I met the man when he was still commandant when he visited Afghan. My impression was that he was a buruecrat and a toadie.

When general dunford suceeded him grunts rejoiced, dunford was a dyed in the wool fighting man, but he was "promoted" to chief of staff to get him out of the way and replaced with another talking face who would say yes to whatever obama wanted.

The M27 should have been issued with the drum mags, our M249's are wore out and broken, and the IAR was the best gun I have ever been issued, but politics killed it.

you need to oil them better. they dont need break in, they certainly don't need battering. The M2 is a whore for oil, and if you don't soak it when you get a new one, you can't expect it ti work. kinda like how you don't work without blood
>>
>>30116040
High volumes of fire would probably blow out the gas tube. Also, it would be really hard to use a quick swap barrel with said gas tube.

Guess I'm going to be that guy tell you that the army did with the stoner 63

Unfortunately it wasn't wide spread because Americans are stupid when it comes to proper firearm maintenance from dumb ass officers getting their rocks off with white glove weapon cleanings and cuck ass ncos who are to pussy to have a disagreement with a co, so only the top dog tier 1 of devgru operators got to use these fine instruments of death

Not technically a ar type system but same guy so close enough for me

Turns out being super heavy, closed bolt, and being adaptable to all kinds of different mounting methods makes for a really good HMG.
