Technically, it was a 60 men garrison composed of territorials (2nd rate reservists that were deemed too old or unfit for service and were generally given menial jobs). Literally thousands. The area around Douaumont is still considered unsafe as fuck to dig for stuff. Until recently, it wasnt that uncommon to hear about some farmer blowing up from time to time.
Estimates are that in the worst areas of Verdun, the average number of shells that fell was ten per each FUCKING SQUARE CENTIMETER. A hill literally lost about a dozen meters of height during the course of the battle.
Verdun was insanity. There are still 100 000 soldiers unaccounted for in that tiny sector alone.

Guys used to go to Verdun and camp there in the interwar period. They'd take their whole families and say "yes, I was in this sector". It's one of the only battles where the veterans would rather talk about it with their loved ones than not, apparently because so many of them felt that they couldn't be part of their families unless their loved ones understood what had happened to them.
