Picture an airgun that shoots real slugs. Compressed air propels the bullet forward. The idea is to have a hearing safe gun that isn't a .22. What does /k/ think?

If the main consideration for you HD gun is hearing safety then get a $60 pair of electric muffs and keep them next to your proven HD gun.
I can't overstate the disandavtages of using an airgun for home defense, the variables in air pressure/feeding reliability/follow up shots make airguns inherently flawed for HD.

Multiple people here have suggested electronic muffs. These things work and really do amplify ambient noise while blocking out shots.
There really is no better option, asides from man up take the tinnitus and make your first shot count.
