Thats way to many mags on your rig. I carry 6 +1 in my rifle and any spare ammo or mags in assault pack that can be easily grounded to facilitate maneuver. Pistol is a weapon on last resort I wouldn't carry more then 3 spare mags + 1 in the weapon.

In SHTF it's about wearing the most practical durable shit you have because that's all your going to have. In my opinion it's best to carry at least 500 rds in your main rifle more if possinle because that's generally what Marines take on patrols and such. In a shtf you're only going to have what's on you and granted you should be avoiding conflicts whenever possible and not spending a tin of ammo it's not hard to spend 200 rds in a single firefight especially if it's a long firefight or your vastly out numbered. Better to stack the odds in your favor where you can and I don't think carrying 500rds is that obnoxious especially of you already got a plate carrier.

There's also the issue of responding police/national guard/aid workers reacting negatively to you (whether it's as simple as just refusing to help you or as fatal as opening fire) because you're carrying a firearm. Like I said, most "SHTF" situations that are actually likely are going to be weather-related -- a tornado or hurricane, heat waves, major snow/ice storms, etc. People aren't going to be looting much in those conditions, because everything is destroyed. There's no sense robbing a house when the house is underwater.
Even in katrina, most of the "looting" was played up by the media and was mostly mercenaries popping off shots for no reason. Or that one great story of a "raging firefight" that turned out to be a car repeatedly misfiring.
Or better yet, the 98 ice storm. Barely any looting or other crime happened during that period, because it was too fuckoff cold to go looting, and there were police (and military, in some spots) out who could easily stop you. Most people just stayed home.
It really sounds more like you people are the real criminals -- you just call it "scavenging" instead of "looting" even though your plans literally come down to knocking over a grocery store with an AK as soon as the power is out for longer than five minutes.
