I'm currently thinking of getting either a Marlin Model 60, or Ruger 10/22 as my first gun. Which one should I get?
>>
If dubs op buys both
>>
>>30084388
Ruger 10/22 is one of the best weapons I have ever owned, in my opinion.

If I get dubs, OP buys the worst first gun ever.

Get a 10/22. More people have them and there's a huge aftermarket parts selection.
>>
Op can i ask why are you buying a .22?
If dubs op buys a 12 guage
>>
If dubs OP buys a transferrable Chauchat
>>
>>30084414
Roll for 12 guage
>>

I'm pretty busy so I'll rarely get to shoot, and I'm currently interested in plinking and getting a hang of the basics of riflery. Not really interested in shotguns based on past experience, and you need to be 21 to buy a handgun in my state.
>>
>>30084477
Dang i guess no one told you that .22 is obscure now. 9mm is the new cheapest plinking ammo. For riflery (real big boy shit) itd be best to buy a mosin or sks
>>
>>30084502
Or he could buy a 9mm rifle

Oh please. It's not as filthy cheap and flooding store shelves, but it's still plenty common and you can buy it by the hundreds or thousands without breaking the bank.
>>
>>30084502
I've heard. One consideration is that I might be moving about between two places, one of which doesn't restrict 22.lr while everything else is tyrannical.
>>
>>30084557
Then the ruger is simple has plenty of aftermarket and will eat all the flavors. Youll probably sell the marling later for a 10/22. So save your time
>>
>>30084552
9mm is the new .22 and you just better shut up and accept it

I really want to fight you. It's almost taunting how assassins your opinion is.

First gun .357 mag s&w 686 plus. I'm beyond pleased with it.

Bonus Mac n Cheese after range time.

Asinine* and btw I'm a Ruger fan myself. IMO go for Ruger OP
>>
>>30084388
Marlin is probably a little better other than the fact that reloading is funky and slow. It is more accurate though and cheaper to boot. 10/22 has a giant aftermarket though so it can become anything you like. I have a Marlin 60 myself and I like it. But man, the reloading thing...
>>
Marlin 795
>>
>>30084597
they are entirely different categories
>>
>>30084774
Own one, I second this.
>>
>>30084774
Yeah that. Light, cheap, and very accurate. Everything you want from a plinker.
>>
>>30084388
i own both
the marlin is better out of the box
the ruger has aftermarket
if you want mags get the marlin795 instead of the 60
>>
>>30084477

Marlin. The only reason to get the Ruger is to modify it

It of the big the Marlin is better and cheaper.
>>
>>30084597
Considering 9mm is still 3x the price for even cheap bulk shit I'm gonna go ahead and not accept it.
>>
>>30085589
double not 3x
>>
>>30084597
>9mm is the new .22

You're one of those people who buy $0.10/round .22 and cry because you don't know how to find deals, huh?
>>

>>
>>30085708
ur one of those people who buys 9mm .20/round and cry cuz u dont know how to reload huh
>>
>>30084388
They're both excelent rifles. i'd go with the Ruger though.

My first .22 was a Sears branded Winchester 190. Tube mags take forever.
>>
>>30084388
Both are very good.

Get the Ruger if you want to futz around with it. Yuuuuuge after-market options.

Get the Marlin if you want a utilitarian shooter. Also be aware that the 795 has a detachable magazine if you don't like the 60's under-barrel tube feed.

The 60 points / indexes better for me, but that's a very subjective measurement.
Go handle both and see what you like.

Do not buy a 10/22 op, they're jam-o-matics. Even more importantly they're dangerous. Pic related, is the bulged cases I get consistently out of my 10/22

Maybe you should closely examine your issue, and determine whether it's user error or take it to a gunsmith.
>>
As an owner of both. Get the 10/22.
It has an aftermarket that is almost as big as the Ar15.

The model 60. Is a great gun. But a pita to reload, with the tube magazine

Have you considered the CZ 455 series? From what I've read it's a really good gun and might be something you're interested if you're interested in "basics of riflery" and stuff.

I'm thinking about getting one as my first gun. Would be curious to hear any thoughts on it.

Also, what's a good next-step-up from a .22LR (like, if there's a gun that fires a cheap center-fire caliber for getting lots of practice in)? I'm wondering whether or not I should just skip the CZ and just get an AR.

Model 60 and variants there of are good... If you get a 795, it would probably be wise to look at replacement stocks.
>>
>>30086539
The CZ are known to be very good, and very widespread in countries where semi autos are harder to get.
There are cheaper bolt action 22, but anytime someone talks about getting one people say "just get a CZ".

>Also, what's a good next-step-up from a .22LR (like, if there's a gun that fires a cheap center-fire caliber for getting lots of practice in)?
A pistol caliber carbine in 9mm.
Or just get an AR.
>>
>>30084712
I've got one (Model 60) too. Quite accurate, inexpensive, lotso fun. The reloading is a wee bit tedious, but it's not that bad. Also, mine was made in 1976, and has been trouble free with thousands of rounds shot through it.
>>
I have a ruger and i think its alright, but sometimes there is a spark in the ejection port when i shoot, is this normal? I don't remember seeing it before

Model 60 cause its cool and has a tube that holds 18 long rifleroonies

as a guy who has shot a number of 10/22s and owns a model 60, as much as I love my model 60, get the 10/22, you can turn it into whatever you want with common and readily available aftermarket parts. Even if you plan to leave it bone stock, the 10/22 is much more of a joy to shoot simply due to reloading the rotary magazines is so much more enjoyable than fumbling with the tube mag

Smith and Wesson m&p 12/22
>>

>>
>>30088618
its just unburnt powder. happens sometimes with my /1022 depending on the ammo i get
>>
>>30088618
Stop shooting shitty ammo (Remington) and your spark will go away.

There is literally nothing in a 10/22 (or any other .22 for that matter) that can cause a spark. For example, your steel alloy bolt rides in an aluminum receiver. it literally cannot physically create a spark.
>>
Am I the only one who didn't get a .22 as their first gun? I got an 8mm Mauser. Years later my older brother got a 10/22 and I fired a few hundred rounds and man, it gets boring after a while. I rather shoot my mauser and anything in 7.62x39.
>>
Marlin 60 costs less and is better out of the box.
Ruger 10/22 has better resale value and more aftermarket parts.

I have both. I'd suggest the Marlin over the Ruger.
>>
>>30089580

My Mosin was my first rifle.

.22LR is good for cheap plinking but not much else. maybe for taking out squirrels. But I'd rather shoot 300rds of 22LR than 50rds of .223 at the range, from a purely financial standpoint

Also it's a lot quieter so if you're dicking around at somebody's house innacountry you're less likely to attract unwanted attention. At least here in CA.
