We have STALKER threads semi-regularly here, but how about a Fallout thread for fans of a different kind of post apocalyptia.
Stories, favorite guns, mod suggestions, whatever, I'll lead with some pics.

Better weapon variety with round by round loading weapons as well as magazines, more ammo variety both in calibers and special types, overall solid writing and enough references to F1 and 2 to feel like part of the overall continuity rather than it's own thing.
Personally I play TTW, also like Fallot 3 a lot but 4 really disappointed me. We're not here to have a shitstorm about which is best though, leave that the /vg/

Trying a heavily modded survival run in 4 right now, and I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. Firefights end in one or two hits most of the time, so sneaking and cover is absolutely essential.
Also, Piper is easily the best fallout grill.

Pretty much what I thought, that's why I modded it. One that adds an autosave when you transition areas, and another that allows you to fast travel between your settlements that have caravans connecting them, for a small fee. it works out quite well actually.
The no console thing kind of sucks if you get stuck and need to noclip, but hey, there's a mod for that too.

I'd probably make a group a lot like the Minutemen, or the NCR, or really like the Lyons BOS.
Basic bitch good guys, open to most everyone who can pass the tests to get in.

I recommend powered power armor for a mod, it's a highly detailed system that lets you custom tailor your power armor to be capable of various things such as energy discharges, increase your run speed, give you thermal optics, and provide medical attention in battle. you just have to be kind of careful about power consumption and heating or you'll end up up shit creek with no paddle

I'll admit, from a purely /k/ perspective, NV was better than 4, definitely in terms of variety of weapons, ammo, and armor. That said, the DLC has really brought 4 to life in my opinion. Far harbor was great, and adding lever action rifles back into the game was a good move. There's just something DEEPLY satisfying about running around with a legendary mare's leg that does 15 extra points of explosive damage. Blasting the legs out from under a charred feral ghoul and then calmly walking up to finish it off fulfills me on a primal level.
Also, survival mode is actually a semi decent representation of what a shtf scenario would look like. Getting shot will actually kill you, need to keep track of your vitals, have to cook food, disease becomes a thing, etc. obviously it's not perfect, but for what it is, it's pretty decent.
I've got a deep love for NV, and I understand why 4 wouldnt be everyone's favorite, but I still think 4 was pretty damn decent, and it's DCL really allows it to shine.

I might give it another look. I was really hyped for 4 when it was coming out, but it very quickly wore thin and left a bad taste in my mouth. It's not the guns as much as it was the repetitive radiant 'kill everything at X location' quests and almost complete lack of anyone I cared about in the setting. The terrible weapons was the icing on the cake but there were a lot of other reasons I went back to Tale of Two Wastelands after playing a lot of 4.

also best ending to far harbor is using the brotherhood to kill Dima and his synth fukkin shits, then kill the children of atom in a nigh impenetrable suit of leaded power armor before mopping up with the nuclear launch key. The whole "hurr appeasement" "everyone is best off if controlled" message left a bad taste in my mouth playing the dlc like they wanted you to. Fuck Dima and fuck cultists. There needs to be a mod to make the game more shades of grey regarding bethcuckda making the "farharbor is for harbormen" gunshop owner such a one dimensional asshole evil goy for not tolerating violent religious extremists and foreigners.

That and the stupid Borderlands weapons system, the radiant quests and the speaking character with a set background that makes it very hard to roleplay.

That pretty much sums it up, that and how most of the quests only ever had one way to complete them that almost always involved violence, there were only a couple I can remember that had nonviolent solutions.
Oh and how the speech system was ruined and only charisma could ever influence speech ability, removal of any special options beyond persuade, how most of the dialogue options were just the same lines with slightly changed wording, so on and so forth.
I'm not mad, just disappointed.

Lee was right though. He wasn't one dimensional, he was correct about Tektus wanting to kill them all, and the only reason that Captain Avery disagreed with him was because Dima replaced her. I was actually on board with dima wanting peace, and I was hoping the option to kill Tektus and bring back Martin would appear, but when I discovered dima's real machinations I immediately launched the nuke. The children get the grand division that they want, the harbormen no longer have to worry about a cult of irradiated psychopaths, and dima doesn't get to replace all the island's leaders with synths under his control to turn the whole island into Institute 2: Electric Boogaloo
Add to the fact that Longfellow is an absolutely based madman, and I thought the DLC was pretty enjoyable. Not to mention it only reaffirmed my devotion to the BoS by showing that synths are NEVER to be trusted.

I totally get it. 4 had a MUCH more linear, set storyline, and role playing outside of it was more difficult than it was it NV. I still had fun playing it though, as it was a story I liked. I do think the radiant quests are dumb, with the exception of tinker tom's because at least they don't infinitely re spawn and they take you to some cool, scenic locations.
My really big problem was the factions. The gunners were just a palette swapped talon company from 3, and while the raiders had some cool lore expansion with the different gangs, we never see that used beyond a few terminal entries. In NV, the NCR and Legion were both VERY well fleshed out in terms of themes and motives, and they both felt like very real societies. And while I'm a whore for everything BoS, their motives were never explained beyond "hurr institute evil synths evil we crush!" Add to that the fact that we don't have anything like the gun runners, the Crimson caravan, or the followers, and it just winds up feeling like I don't have as many characters that I can truly get invested in.
I'm mixed on the guns. There are fewer guns in 4 than NV, but modifying them is cool. Far Harbor adding more was much needed and highly refreshing, but I'm REALLY hoping 4 gets a "gun runners arsenal" type DLC, as that would put me VERY solidly back into enjoying the game.
Overall, I DO think NV is better in a lot of ways, but I also enjoyed 4 as a game.

It's been really, really nagging me that there are very few friendly factions and that pretty much every random group you come across is hostile.
In New Vegas most factions, aside from raiders, vipers and jackals, were only hostile if you'd made them hostile.
Its the same with settlements, every place you come across is deserted, full of bodies or raiders, its depressing.
Having said all that, I've played well over a hundred hours, I love exploring and can't wait for the DLC.
I just can't help thinking what it would have been like if they'd have kept the New Vegas content, if its as good as it is with its numerous flaws, imagine what it would've been like if they weren't present.

I've described Fallout 4 as a mechanically fun, perfectly functional toybox with nothing truly engaging in it. Fun exploration, fun fights, some fun weapons and gameplay, but in the end there's almost nothing for someone who wants to be engaged with story or characters.
And yeah, it really got to me how there were only like 2 maybe 3 actual settlements with any kind of personality to them, most of the Commonwealth was just a great big empty expanse of raiders, mutants, fuck all and more raiders.
I was doing a modded run of NV for a while at max graphics that was great. Then my graphics card shit out, gtx 950, and I got it replaced with a gtx 960. Now for whatever reason I can't run the game much above "normal" graphics setting, and it frequently freezes for 1-2 seconds when opening containers or pausing. That really killed it for me.

story killed new vegas and 3 for me. bout 120 hours on my most recent char and I havent done any main story shit unless it's relevant to the goals and MO of the char. I take the RP part of RPGs pretty seriously and bethesda is great for them seeing as theyre mostly just giant gameplay sandboxes.
new vegas was extremely limited by main story progression, while in 4 the main story is kinda always there in dialog and interactions, it's much easier to ignore and replace with your own.

yeah for a game which doesn't allow you to be a bad guy, has a severe lack of sidequests in favor for a poorly written main story with no replay value, an incredibly bland world, and extremely casualized gameplay Fallout 4 is pretty decent

I agree. Almost 570 hours and just about finished with my first play through of 4. Far Harbor was top notch and I can't wait for Nuka World. Playing with a decent PC, I didn't experience many issues that weren't addressable, and few crashes. Getting ready to go back and start playing the series from the beginning again.

It really comes down to your individual approach to a game. How much you want to imagine scenarios and RP in your head vs. letting the story lead you in your RP. Each game has its own atmosphere that makes me feel a certain way and I love the series for that. Sometimes I want to roam the Capitol Wasteland and leave supplies for imaginary travellers, other times I want to build and purge settlements.

For one reason

you're one guy acting as the pin to the grenade of a struggle between at most 100 people, with the option to bring in an outside group (BHoS) and fukkinReck one of the major factions in about 5 minutes right at the start. It's "believable" that you can kill far harbor by shutting off the fog condensers, nuke the children of atom/power armor your way through all 30 of them, or cheeki breeki the 20 people in Arcadia with half a dozen dudes with rifles.
In FO4 you're a man trying to find his son... who because reasons becomes the most important person in massachusetts around which EVERYTHING depends, even the day to day operations of EVERY settlement in the game. You get no sense of living in a functioning world. FO is about being a guy with a mission you can choose to ignore, exploring the wild wasteland of 22XX, not being it's jesus allegory messiah.

this is one of the most retarded things in FO4. In real life, and every other fallout game raiders/bandits are realistically rare or are organized groups with infrastructure that explains their longevity. in NV the jackals and vipers number less than 10 members on the whole map and are purposefully waiting in ambush with the fiends based out of a vault with vault resources supplemented by le cannibalism and being methzombies. everyone else is either a town or a faction controlling territory

The damage mod is just one that makes survival mode have a 2.5x(or 3x?) multiplier for everyone, not just enemies. Piper mod is called Loving Piper IIRC

The weapon mod is called Modern Firearms Gunsmith edition. It adds the AR/ACR/MP5/HK416(417)/G36/SCAR L&H/Sig 55x series/and the AK platforms, with all the mods you can build being different barrels, grips, sights, stocks, etc. It's really cool, but has a few issues with buggy and/or half finished mods, and since the mods don't effect damage values, they are all tuned for late game damage by default. Also, default FO4 animations aren't really made with real world guns in mind, so get used to this kind of thing until someone starts making different animations.
Had a lot of fun using the T-800 terminator mod. Full on endoskeleton with a china lake 40mm and minigun. Leveraction shotty for trifecta

There is a big compilation of all his guns, but it's not got the latest ones. I think the compilation has them integrated into vendor lists and some spawn lists. Powder Gangers with Mac 10s and the like.

Yeah, another one you should look into is Heffy's AR15 and AK47 modpack.
Introduces a metric ton of guns to the game, with vendor and level lists it seems.
Also, the CaliberX mod is a must before all others, as it puts in all the proper ammo types for the various guns.
Gives an interesting bit of forced variety as far as having to switch over from your AK74 because you're out of that caliber.

Then of course you get into changing reload animations, Heffy's pack has anims for the weapons it comes with but personally the 1st person stuff isn't my favorite, so I use other animations pulled from various sources for AR animations and 1st person AK reloads.
There's also a mod I can track down that makes jamming more realistic, as in it happens while firing rather than only when reloading.

I've had fallout 4 since day one and haven't played more than 10 minutes yet.
TFW over 5000 hours on fnv, and close to the same on fo3. I have customized my NV so that all unique characters, and almost all random characters have their own appearance with lore friendly outfits and weapons. Backpacks, lots and lots of extra gear Fallout left out. I used resources gathered from other mods to make my own so I could never release much because no models are mine. I have a few base mods I released on the nexus, only one that I'm pretty happy about but that's it.

Veronica is my waifu thanks to it. 45-70 seems like a neat caliber now. I have used "what in the goddamn" when startled or befuddled thanks to it. Big Iron was my brain's background noise for too long after my first playthrough. I am going to get a wood furniture AR thanks to it. Such a strong mod community even for shitty first time mod makers they all listen and care.

I agree, the texture especially looks terrible today, but I think that retex did a pretty good job. I think I had to manually install the textures though because I play TTW, and it runs off of New Vegas, and those mods were for Fallout 3 and never were ported over. Modding my Fallout has been a long and arduous project I think I might be seeing the end of soon, even did a few things of my own, mostly just playing with other people's assets.

I got a little ways into NV and finally got fed up with their snarky fucking comments telling me to watch myself and such that I did just enough storyline to gain access to Caesar's camp and murdered every living thing on his shitty little island.
Best part is, there was a glitch that reloaded everybody's belongings in his compound when I exited and re-entered, so I pillaged all the bodies like 6-7 times before I got tired of it.
Never really looked into what Caesar's storyline yielded, but don't really care. It was super satisfying killing all those fuckwads.

G3 is pretty awesome as mods go. Damage is not too strong or too weak.

I could not so much as look at any of the guns that resembled a real life gun. I'm gonna have to wait a year or 2 until I there are enough quality weapon mods out for me to never see a vanilla weapon from that game again.

Food isn't affected by hardcore mode apart from removing hunger and such, even mid tier food is gonna heal for about 8-9 health per second once you're just half way into survival, and the effects stack from multiple food sources. Eat three different steaks and a couple of different old world foods and you're easily looking at 40 health per second.
Imagine you have toughness, skin implant and rad child on critical rad poisoning and high endurance, cram a ton of food in your face and you become very difficult to take down. Start doing drugs and shit gets really crazy.
I barely even notice I'm playing hardcore mode, because most games I just fill half my carry capacity with food and drugs and then one or two kinds of ammo, and usually not a whole lot.
More than I make shooty, choppy or talky characters, hardy is what defines most of my Couriers.
All the fallouts except 1&2 are barbie dress up games designed for men.
