The main reason for the rifle length buffer equipment is the gas system. Carbine buffer stuff (IIRC) wears the spring out faster with rifle gas since they weren't really meant to be combined.
If you start having problems, I recommend switching to an H2 buffer. It will let you keep the collapsible stock, and prevent further damage.

I noticed that when I was feeling for it, the nail on my index finger would clip on the dust cover, which was pretty painful.

It's normally recessed, but when the bolt is locked to the rear it pops out, right? The KAC bolt release has a rod attached to it that pushes all the way through the reciever to the right side release IIRC
The MEGA ambi release just uses an extended release pin that is twice as long as the regular one. The button is always "popped out"

Fixed or folding?
For fixed I like LMT, even though it is rather bulky, For poorfags you can chop a GI take off carry handle and have basically the same thing.
For folding, I love Stolen Valor, Matech is nice, but I feel like I'm the only one who likes them. MUBS Pro are good, the polymer ones are good for the money, but you get so much more for $30-40 more, or by buying stolen valor.

But if you just want a helmet to check the block then look into an ACH(of varying cuts) They can be had for decent prices depending on what's been put on them. And it will be a far better option than those cheap knock offs.
The helmet o had was super thick from the layering process. It appeared as if they added several extra layers to make sure it could stop Lvl 3 threats. rather than coming up with a good design and paying for NIJ testing. The chin strap was complete shit and the pads were made of shitty foam rubber.
