It seems like the it's the families of "servicemen" or those entirely unrelated to the military that say some shit about it.

I wear a greenish backpack and a tan baseball cap. I did like two weeks of service during conscription. Some guy walked up to me and asked me about the colour of some house where I was stationed. I get stolen valor but this kind of paranoia is annoying too.

To be honest, I'm tempted to make a purposefully impossible costume and take a serious looking photo with a completely back assward uniform. Patches in the wrong places, things from different branches worn together, mutually exclusive items, campaign bars from across 200 years of history and the occasional item from another country entirely, just to see who would notice.
Thinking about joining the state defense forces.

Only in very special circumstances does the US armed forces carry any authority over a civilian. Wearing a uniform out in public is protected free speech because there is nothing that wearing a uniform in public allows you to do. Now, try getting on a military base you can probably be charged with something above and beyond just trespassing on military property.
You aren't allowed to wear a police or deputy uniform in public if you're not an on-duty peace officer. That is not protected speech, that's impersonating an officer. Maybe Coast Guard and National Guard uniforms might be protected, since they do in some instances have police power, but I would suspect that individual would still have to illegally detain someone to get charged with anything illegal.
I wonder if in an open carry state you can dress in a Coast Guard uniform and open carry a pistol on your hip. Theoretically you could do either-or and be fine with the law, but both at the same time will probably see you go down for impersonating an officer.

I did nothing because people who do this whole stolen valor thing likely do so because they were neglected or a variety of other things.
When I was younger, I was surrounded by vets or other traumatized people in general who often told me that if I didn't go through a war in my life, or if I never killed a man, I didn't deserve any kind of admiration or consideration from anyone, and I wasn't even deserving of my own life.
You could say those are just things that damaged individuals say, but regardless of that, it destroyed me in childhood and those remarks still have an influence on my actions today, as I tend to take blatantly dangerous or confrontational paths through things that have other options.
I feel like if I had been a certain type of person or exposed to such remarks at a different time in my life, I could have been at risk for being one of those "stolen valor" people.
If you focus on how they act, they do most often seem insanely insecure or sad, from what I've seen.
Because of that, I kind of feel bad for them, regardless of whether what they're doing is wrong or not.

The main employee at the tire shop in my town is a fat dumbfuck who goes on about bullshit war stories. Any time I got my tires changed, I'd just hang out because it's fucking hilarious to watch this guy make a fool of himself. According to his service record, he did 3 years, never left the states never earned anything more than the freebie ribbons.
This dumbfuck has 3 months (by timeline) of stories about constant combat in the Gulf war (which lasted 100 hours).
Dipshit tried selling me a $15 Walmart holster for $25 and swore up and down it was military issue. Every bubbafied deer rifle he has is a "sniper rifle". Supposedly speaks Arabic fluently.
I didn't care if they had the best price in the area, I drive the extra 20 miles if I need new tires. I got tired of listening to his bullshit and it cost his employer my business. It's not about putting military service on an altar, it's that I don't care to trust the safety of my family to a liar.
