So my father gave me his Hi-Power as a graduation gift.
The gun has never been shot in 30 years and the nearest range is 1 hour away from my home so i haven't shot it yet.
I do however have some 9mm fmj with it and i decided to dry fire and test the gun a little.
When i put the magazine in and rack the slide the first round goes in easily but if i do it again the rounds always jam and i have failures to extract.
My question is this a good way to know if a gun is reliable or not?

Using 5.45x39 surplus out of a 14" AR, what distance should I zero my scope at? Googled and pretty much everyone said zero for 100 but I don't have a 100 yd range. I know when I was in the military we simply zeroed our rifles at 35 yds (IIRC) so we could get on target when we went to range, which is where we did the fine tuning, but that's it.

Im not sure about 545 but in a 556 ar the 50 yard zero is close to a 200 yard zero so anything in between is pretty close

Since parts of yall are from military families I assume, and got brothers/fathers/sons/... deploying, I figured I'd ask here.

How to deal with a family member being in a far away country, possibly in harm's way?

>be dad, last year
>62nd birthday rolls around
>retired
>decides, fuck golf, imma learn a new language
>cool so far, which one?
>turkish
>lolwut, ok, your time and money

>this year
>yall know my teacher said I'd learn much faster if I lived in turkey
>books "study vacation" through some agency
>travels to istanbul

>today
>get skype message from dad
>talk about this and that, nothing special
>casually mentions "loads of jets" above, nato or turkey, he cant tell
>casually mentions "I've never seen so many armed guys like here"
>"security forces everywhere, some with smg, some with assault rifles, all pistols, many flak jackets"
>(didnt even know he knew the term flak jacket)
>"platoons visible infront of museums and stuff"
>"a guy every 200 or so yards on literally every road"

Well. We all know what the rule "more cops=more safety" is worth.
So Istanbul being Istanbul, and snackbars being snackbars, I am somewhat concerned for my dad's well-being.
What do? How cope?

Thanks in advance

Does anyone manufacture a rail mountable pepper spray?

Like for pistols with rails, or underbarrel on an AR

Like I think some kind of pepper spray/mace could be a very very useful weapon attachment for short notice debilitation of short range targets/cqc

I don't mean a ltl option, I mean in conjunction with an actual gun. Like they're armed and too close to line up the shot, so just hit the pepper button and they'll probably drop their aim and stagger so you can line them up in relative safety (compared to them not being pepper sprayed in the face)

Or maybe some kind of talc or chalk thrower attachment? co2 powered cartridges that have some kind of 10 meter cone, would be a flashbang alternative if you just spray a shitload of dust into their eyes (yes I got this idea from pocket sand)

I'm sure this kind of shit could be marketed as LTL as well; but that aside, I think both of these could be pretty useful as supplements to lethal options.
>>
>>30069974
The gun ought to extract the round, but it may not eject it cleanly unless you're pulling the slide back with a lot of force.

If you're not letting the slide snap forward at full speed the breech may not be locking. Make sure the slide is fully locked forward and the extractor is engaged in the extractor groove of the cartridge.

If the gun is still not extracting the most likely culprit is a weak extractor spring, the next likely is a worn out extractor. This is not hard to fix, but you need to know how and have the correct tools. A gunsmith should not charge much if you aren't up to doing it yourself.

If you do need to replace a spring, I'd also replace the recoil spring and the firing pin spring. Wolff gunsprings are excellent, and they sell sets for the BHP.

BTW: it's a good idea to use dummy rounds for function testing. I assume you know to be very careful to keep your trigger finger outside of the trigger guard!.

Just make sure you buy or make a sleeve for the buffer tube. Makes shooting it much more comfy. They're dirt cheap.

You can shoot either safely out of a 5.56mm barrel.

5.56mm rounds *may* be loaded to a higher pressure than what is spec'd for .223, which is what may cause kabooms.

The vast majority of ARs these days are rated for 5.56mm, unless you really hunt down some unusual part.

.223 has a very specific set of specification that must be adhered to under SAAMI. 5.56, being the standard adopted by the military does not adhere to SAAMI specifications and is often loaded hotter. Nowadays most chambers you find are 5.56, but special ones such as .223 wylde and novske's special one are both safe for .223 and 5.56 as well.

I'm not a regular here, but I am sure you guys have been asked this a lot before, and I'm wondering if there is any consensus on which round is "better" between 7.62x39mm and 5.56mm.

5.56mm shoots flatter, is lighter, is smaller (thus allowing for a smaller and less curved magaine), has less recoil, has a higher muzzle velocity.

It is a better overall military service round. The Soviets switched to 5.45mm because they also realized this.

7.62mm is around because the Soviets gave out a fuckton of rifles and 7.62mm rifle making machinery to the 3rd world. And because people believe the stoppin' powa and barrier penetration memes. The Russian Army still uses the occasional AKMS, but almost always in a suppressed configuration, this is because the AKMS was made to accept a suppressor and the Russians have a ton of surplus 7.62mm suppressors.
>>
>>30079369
Yes. .223 is good out of whichever.

And to correct/clarfy myself, it isn't the *barrel* which is the factor so much as it is the chamber where you worry about pressure. Not that it makes a difference to somebody buying a complete rifle, but just correcting.
>>
>>30079381

My question:

>BMT is in early August
>running to lose weight (not fat but want to look better)
>working my way up

I ran 5 miles a few days ago, but had to tone it down and I'm doing 2 a night now. I ran an average of a mile in 10 minutes, but I ran around a lake up and down a lot of pretty steep hills. Is this okay, or should I focus on speed and not length?

Running is the only thing that has me worried. I'm doing a test with the recruiter soon but I just wanted to check here quickly.

Also, how likely is it that I could switch asfc to police or even EOD after 3 years? That's a very slight possibility but still on the table.

What's the minimum suitable for penetrating level IV ceramic (rated for 30-06 AP at about 1000m/s)

More speed? (30-06 accelerator?)
More mass (357 H&H?)
Some combination?
>>

Speed and sectional density penetrates
Projectile hardness is the third side of that formula

Ok, so if 30-06 AP is pushing the limits of NIJ IV already.

30-06 M2 AP has a sectional density of 0.257 (162 gr, .30")

and the accelerator has sectional density of 0.359 (125gr, .223")

As long as the accelerator has a similar steel core, this should be enough to defeat ceramic?

Sorry I didn't even read your post I just maximized the image.

They are a training crutch, first of all. It's more efficient to do a normal reload and retain your magazine in the pouch it came from than throw it in a dump pouch and risk it falling out. I imagine SEALs don't train with them period because they are also a huge risk during maritime operations since they are more or less buckets for water to get pooled up in.

You see CAG, MARSOC and SF guys using dump pouches very frequently though, so obviously they are not such a considerable risk that is totally out of the question for high speed operations.

>They are a training crutch, first of all.

Er, no they aren't. Lots and lots of people use them in actual operations because they work.

>It's more efficient to do a normal reload and retain your magazine in the pouch it came from than throw it in a dump pouch and risk it falling out.

It is not. It takes more time and effort and you have to fumble with the pouch a little bit. It doesn't seem like a lot, but the difference between 2 seconds fucking with a pouch and 0.05 seconds tossing a mag in a dump pouch is a big thing.

Before dump pouches, people still would toss empties into cargo pockets rather than back into a vest. Every anti-dump pouch old timer I've met in the military has their opinion because they still use a cargo pocket, not mix shit into a vest. Mixing empty or almost empty mags back into your vest is begging to end up reloading an empty mag into a rifle.

>I imagine SEALs don't train with them period because they are also a huge risk during maritime operations since they are more or less buckets for water to get pooled up in.

Or, check this out: Maybe they tailor their equipment to their mission? Like, if you're operating inna Afghanistan, you won't being wearing the same shit as if you're doing martime operations.

Also even if they want dump pouches for martime operations, it is very simple to avoid having their dump pouches be buckets. They either get mesh pouches, or pouches with drainage holes. Problem fucking solved.

For whatever reason, dump pouches are more debated than any other pouch type. It's a fucking external pocket. Some people use it some don't. Plenty of SEALs/SF/Rangers/Army infantry/USMC/ who the fuck ever use them if they feel like it on a personal level.

Well, when I first noticed that SEALs, in most cases, don't use dump pouches I was surprised, not by the fact, where does the empty mags go - I assumed they just throw them on the ground, as it is certainly the fastest option. I was surprised that they get rid of tremendous versatility of said pouch. I use it for storing countless items for like 5 minutes when I need free hands.

So, finished my AR-10 build, ran 30 rounds through it, and (almost) everything seems good.

Problem is, to get PMags to lock in, I have to shave a bunch of material off the backside of the mag, where they have a bigass bulge around them; after that, they work great. I also just got a steel mag in today, and it'll go in the well eventually, but it's like trying to have a stallion breed a virgin mouse. It definitely doesn't drop free.

So... Is it worth grinding the magwell out a bit, and if so, is there a way to do it neatly? Or would it be better to just keep shaving polymer? It's purely a range toy, so I'm not worried about SHTF or anything like that.

I have a Savage 111 .300 win mag, and I'm waiting on my optic to get here. I've been thinking about selling it to get a Remington 700 in .308. I figure a .308 would be better because it's cheaper, and there isn't very much practical use for a gun that can reach out to 1,200+m. A .300 win mag is cool, but driving a slow car fast often just seems better than driving a fast car slow sometimes. What do you think, /k/, should I cash in my Savage for a Remi?

What physical walk-in stores (yeah I know everything is cheaper online, but I don't like ordering things online) are good for gun safes? (prices)

I just want to get a small safe to put my rifles in, I guess also as a secondary question; how feasible is it for someone to carry one of those home by themselves? Do they come fully assembled? I'm guessing if construction is needed that would be best since it'd be less bulky to carry; I have a ballpark idea of how much they weigh based on lifting them in stores, it's just that I don't know if it'd fit in the backseat of my car, so I'm more concerned about bulk than weight

I'm just looking at those 120-150$ 8-10 gun stand up safes; Id REALLY prefer to cut out middleman costs (Delivery), I guess if I find something I REALLY like, I can go and borrow an suv if it's too big to fit in my own car.

So I guess my main question is; my nearby options are essentially bass pro, dick's sporting; they have SIMILAR things as to what I'm looking for which are similarly prices, I guess what I'm asking is which one is the better one cost/value wise.

I mean I have like walmarts and lowes nearby and they carry safes, but my local ones don't.

I know you can also order for pickup, but I've taken the next week off of work, so I really want to get this all squared away before I go back to work and then this gets to be a hassle.

So I have a question. I have my AR and my pistols. Now I want a long range rifle, something that I can hit a stationary target at 1k yards with.
Which caliber, and any recommendations? I'd prefer to keep the rifle + scope under $1000.
>>
>>30097730
For price you'll probably put most in a good scope. Single shot in something like .416 barret or .50 BMG. Cost per round is out the ass though.
>>
>>30097823
Any reason you're so high on the caliber spectrum? I was looking at a 24 inch, Savage FCP-SR in .308 for about 560. I've seen videos of it hitting at 1k yards, but I've also seen someone make a 500 yard pistol shot. So they may be the exception not the rule.
>>
>>30097884
Just thinking 1k+ not 1k max. .308 is a fine caliber and would serve you well. But with nearly $600 for a really nice scope I would still go with a single shot. Comfort can be easily adjusted and maintenance would be next to nothing. Also cost efficient as is possible.

I'm looking to buy a flashlight for my shotgun.

Here are some of the things I'm looking for:
>attachable to a picatinny rail (either directly or a mount ring is available for it)
>able to withstand the recoil of a 12ga shotgun
>pressure-switch compatible
>not terribly expensive
I am willing to spend over $100 if it's worth it, but less is always better. However, I'm not gonna spend $600 for some premium quality Xtreme equipment, no matter how good.

Another thing that would be cool is if it had an SOS function (so that the light flashes "S-O-S" in Morse code at the push of a button), but I don't know if that's a common feature.

Is there a minimum dimension for a free floated barrel to achieve optimum accuracy (all things considered)?

In a perplexing situation /k/omrades.

I'm looking to purchase my first CC Pistol and have pretty much had my eye on the Walther PPS (with the Ruger LC9s Pro and CZ 2075 Rami BD also considered).

Over all, I like the functionality of the PPS M2 that it would normally be an easy decision, but right now one of the range's I go to has a PPS M1 in tungsten grey for sale and I'm wondering if that might be worth looking past some of the other cosmetic flaws on the gun by getting it in the rather unique color.

My reasoning is that firearms are interesting to me while also being useful as tools in the event I'm threatened but lastly being a rather good hobby to invest in.

tl;dr Should I get the gun that is more common but slightly more functional? Or get the gun that is slightly less overall cosmetically pleasing and has a less popular magazine release but comes in a rarer color.

tl;dr 2 - Do you unique colors sell more than their black counterparts? (Especially on guns that don't come in a lot of different varieties unlike 1911's etc).

I'm planning on moving from my freedom loving state of Indiana to Cali soon (I know, fuck me right?). Is there any site that would give me a list of everything I need to do, before and after the move, to have my funs there legally?

I already have a pretty good understanding of their bullshit laws I think, but don't know anyone personally that owns guns there, or has ever moved there with guns.

I'm also concerned about what I own that's illegal there. Correct me if I'm wrong, but all of my handguns can be legally owned after going through the correct procedures, correct? And I believe other than my bby kilng "assult wepoons" and hi cap (aka standard capacity) mags, the only weapons I'd need to worry about are semi auto shotguns, which I own none of. Correct?

Before anyone might ask, I'm hoping for this to be for no more than a few years before moving elsewhere. It definitely ain't permanent.

The AK fits those parameters. The AR isn't far behind. Honestly, it comes down to whether you prefer 5.56 or 7.62x39. If you don't know already, then it's a tough call. Honestly, I have no experience with the bluing pens. When I went to the Glock factory, that's what they told me they do, when I asked about future holster wear.
