Generally the part the is the most susceptible to breakage or damage is the crane. It is the weakest part of the revolver due to it's design. Flicking it like action hero Arnold McClane Rambo McBain puts excessive force on the crane which can lead to timing and or cylinder locking issues after repeated abuse.

Revolvers are less susceptible to malfunction, but more susceptible to abuse. There are a lot of ways you can unknowingly damage a revolver.

This.... its a very common misconception in the firearm world that a revolver will just shoot forever... Take any revolver and shoot at least 1000 rounds without cleaning or oil... They just won't hold up as well as most semi-autos.

Really the only way for a revolver to get too dirty to shoot is if it gets between the extractor and the cylinder, but that problem is non-existent for rugers and most modern revolvers. Other then that, the carbon build up doesn't affect the mechanical operation of a revolver. Semi autos, however, can have crucial mechanisms be clogged up with carbon build up and hinder the operation of the firearm.

Anyways carbon build up in the cylinder won't affect much, but rather the trigger mechanism and springs in the trigger of a revolver is where it will start to fail.
Rugers are by far the best when it comes to shooting a lot of rounds, but semis will actually expel alot of debris through normal function. Revolvers will fail at the trigger and hammer under the same abuse... soooo, no Semi- autos will prevail.

Mostly it's a wear and tear issue. It's a bit like toying with the springs on a semi-auto, no it's not going to break anything but it's bad for the gun and if the spring tension is off the casing stovepipes or double feeds.
