It's a great ship if you're conducting a bombing campaign with total air superiority and a permissive flight environment but it poses the question of needing a dedicated ship for that task.

Shields in Star Wars fighters are basically like wearing soft kevlar armor only while the bad guys are using an intermediate rifle cartridge.
Will it help? Maybe if you are lucky or shot at a strange angle, or if you go full-on shield power just before it hits.

Rebel lasers are generally slower firing. The X-Wings' could fire rapidly, but that's because they were high-powered to begin with and were firing in a reduced power mode.
