Okay okay, during the 1930s, Germany had some alliance to send military trainers and equipment to the Nationalists in fucked up country of China.
Then during the power struggle, the Government had two Asian alliance options, buddy with messed up China or buddy Imperial Japan. The dude supporting China got sacked and a dude supporting Japan got in and then friendship.

Essentially Germany wanted to ally with both China and Japan and then eventually after German victory in Europe and Russia, attack to wipe out Japan with China's help.
