Is a coach gun viable for home defense?
>>
>>30043048
yes, idk why you even have to ask
>>
>>30043048
Better than no gun.
>>
>>30043048
Viable? Yes. Preferred? No. 12 gauge anything is kick ass for home defense, so I'd still probably prefer that to a handgun, but you'd be much better off with a pump action or semi auto shotgun.
>>
Ideal? No.

Viable? Yes.

And ol' Diamond Joe-approved.

Oh man, those were some of the best articles The Onion ever gave us

For the price of a cheap coach gun of questionable reliability (doubling, failures to fire, etc) you can get a reliable pump-action.
>>
Yep, there are better option but they are ok
>>
>>30043198
A new production coachgun is $400 minimum.
A pawn shop special is $200-300.
A mav88 is $200 max.

No. Shotguns for home defense are fucking stupid. Think about it; it's your home, is it not? Do you not respect the valuables and furnishings in your home? Surely you do, seeing as how you're prepared to defend it with lethal means.

The spread of shotgun pellets will destroy all of the shit within its range inside your house. It's much more sensible to choose a weapon with regular rounds, as to localize and minimize any collateral damage.

I can't tell if you're trolling or stupid. Shot from a shotgun doesn't spread as quickly as you think it does. It's about an additional 1 inch spread per yard traveled, so at max in a home you'd deal with a 1-5 inch pattern.

I want to like shotguns but for HD idk.

Even the ones that are supposed to be "tactical combat scattergats" are all so long and unwieldy.

There is more than one shotgun.
>>
Better than no gun at all and two shots of buckshot/slug will do the job

But unless you live in Ausfalia, there is no reason to get a coach gun for the purpose of home defense over a good pump action shotgun. A pump will be cheaper, hold more rounds, and can be modified for a variety of other purposes with a little bit extra money for barrels or sights

Both a Remington 870 Express and a Mossberg 500 are both under $330 brand new if you wait for them to go on sale.

A hacksaw and blatant disregard for firearms laws would make pic related

that shotgun is completely legal and not NFA

This man speaks truth.

I bought a coachgun because I always wanted one. Being that it was my first shotgun, and at the time my only pistol was a Hi-Point .45 (given to me, don't judge), I thought it'd be designated the home defense gun, and I bought some #4 buckshot

Some time passed and I acquired more guns, then I realized a pump action, which would cost almost half what the coachgun did, which would double my capacity, would have made way more sense. Although I did buy the coachgun essentially for novelty, so I still have it, and figured out when broken down it fits in a ukulele case. But my realization still stands.

That said, my HD go-to is now a 4" S&W Model 10.

This guy gets his shotgun knowledge from movies and vidya
>>
Not OP, but, capacity being the same, would a pump or semi be better? For a dedicated HD gun, I'm thinking either a good old Mossberg, a Dagger SAP-6 (11rds, but strange pump system) or an LA K-12, a bullpup semi 12ga that closely resembles our Type 97s.

There isn't much more lethal than 12 gauge that a civilian can own. I'm not sure about you, but if I'm shooting at someone then I mean to kill them. I'd take 9 shells of 12 gauge out of my m590a1 over 30 rounds of poodle shooter out of an ar15.

yes, particularly if you want to use less-lethal or unique ammunition

A short barrel shotgun (barrel shorter than 18 inches / overall length shorter than 26 inches) is NFA.

If that gun came from the factory with the pistol grip installed then it's still an NFA item called "other", which only requires a $5 tax stamp. If it originally had a stock then either it's either an illegal SBS or something paid for the $200 tax stamp.
>>
>>30049155
To be more specific...

Pistol grip on a shotgun with barrel >18 inches and overall length >26 inches is still a normal shotgun that isn't NFA. A gun from the factory with a pistol grip with a barrel shorter than 18 inches and/or an overall length shorter than 26 inches is an NFA item called "other" which only requires a $5 tax stamp.

You'd be better off using a shotgun or rifle. .38 is called widow maker for a reason.
