Yo /k/! I don't know a god damned thing about guns, but I live in Alaska and want a hand gun I can have in a holster in case I'm backpacking alone 20 miles from the nearest human being and I encounter a menstruating she-bear. What do you suggest for a weapon and its ammunition?

It doesn't really matter, just file the sight off.
It'll hurt less that way when that bear shoves your handgun up your ass.
>>Get a rifle.
>>30039361
Ruger Alaskan, obviously
>>30039361
Glock 19 with fmj for penetrating
hornady custom runs $60-$70 a box here but cabelas has a few different brands for $30-$40

> worried about bears
> faggot suggests a 9mm
> presumably so OP can shoot himself before the bear eats him still living.
seriously, a 9mm for BEAR???
that's retarded.
10mm, 380 super, MAYBE
.357, meh
.44mag now youre talking
a 9mm cant even reliably take down a deer.
.357 magnums can supposedly take down a bear
Although if you want to entrust your life to it, a .44 magnum

>giving that piece of shit bill ruger's ghost money
No.
Glock 29
>>30039541
Dude, 22lr can take down moose, 9mm is plenty for a bear.
>>30039547
>gecko45 plz
How do you not understand how much of a 180 the company pulled once ol Bill passed?
>>30039600
And yet his gun control playbook and legacy live on.

fact: you're less likely to be injured by a bear if you defend yourself with spray instead of a gun.

I would definitely have mace as well. What kind of an idiot goes backpacking without bear bells and spray on them?
>>30039525
Do not listen to this dumbass. A 9mm will get you killed.
I'm no nature conformist but honestly mace is probably a better alternative for your circumstance. You have to take into account that bears, especially big browns and grizzlies, have such a shit slow metabolism that they've been know to take a few rounds and still charge people. Mace reacts almost instantly and has a wide spread. It's sounds like that would be a whole lot easier to use than giving someone with no knowledge of firearms something like a 454 casull to defend themselves.
a 10 mm Glock
powerful enough to kill a bear.
light enough to actually carry when a bear attacks.
>>30039595
That is the most cringy statement I've head on this amazing board in a while holy shit.

>have such a shit slow metabolism that they've been know to take a few rounds and still charge people
that has nothing to do with metabolism.
Diamond driller who worked in bear country here
Anything that you can comfortably hold in your hand is basically a bear banger. If a bear is coming at you, its very well-armored head is about 75% of what you have to shoot at, and you are too busy pissing yourself to take a decent shot. A bear coming at you is fucking terrifying. We carry shotguns. They are very loud and easy to aim no matter how scared you are.
A loud noise is generally enough to make bears fuck off, unless it is really hungry, in which case your best course of action is still to be unloading big booming buck shot into its face. Loud noise + head smashed + possibly taking out its eyes = you get to see your family again. Trying to kill a hungry bear, walking or running towards you with the intent to eat you, with a pistol, is not a good plan for survival.
t. worked in the bush for years, under a guy whose son was killed and eaten by a bear on the job

That one wasn't killed with a 9mm, that one was shot with a single 22lr
