Let's put it this way...
If you use a hacksaw, one barrel will not hit the same place as the other. If you miss half your rounds because one barrel is shooting way off to the side, it's not exactly going to be a very effective shot in self-defense and could very easily result in collateral damage.
If you want to cut a shotgun down, get it done PROFESSIONALLY by someone who has the equipment to do so properly.

It's really quite simple. Cut just above the length you want the barrels to be with hacksaw (or bandsaw), try to make a straight cut as much as possible, and then use a large file to bring the barrels into alignment. Also, make sure to deburr inside and out.
