I've used a shotgun in self defense while innawoods.
Pulled out my carry piece when a big black dog ran at my wife and I while out for a night walk but I waited a moment longer because it was a neighbor's and shouted at it to stop one more time. It did stop, about 4 feet away, and very thankfully I didn't have to shoot. I really don't want to shoot someone's dog even if they didn't train it properly.
Haven't pulled a gun on a person and I hope to never have to. Had someone come to my door gun in hand when I was living in Italy and couldn't own guns. Not a fun experience.

I won't speak as to how weird kommandos are but the reason why you'll find very few instances of someone using their weapon is because generally those of us who carry don't have a gun as a first line of defense. We use our brains first. We don't go through bad neighborhoods at night, we don't stop at gas stations that have a front covered with stickers that leaves you unable to see what's going on inside before you walk in. Definitely we don't stop at one that has bars on the doors and windows even in the day time. Group of "urban youths" being "rowdy" approaching you and the girlfriend in the mall? Nope fuck it we're going this direction or into this store where there are several people shopping and more cameras.
You won't find many people who have used their weapons because people who carry try to make smart decisions and not put themselves in situations where they might have to use their weapon.
Maybe you have some fantasy of using yours but for the rest of us living in the real world we don't want to unless we have to. Hell the only reason I even carry with the places I go is in case of an active shooter situation and even then if I and whoever I might be with can get to the backdoor I'm doing that. Let law enforcement handle it unless I'm in the line of fire.

Pass out from blood loss, in hospital 4 days. 3 arrests, guy who owns dog arrested for attempted murder and owning a fighting dog (local ordinance), extradited on outstanding drug trafficking warrant to another state and AFAIK still pending trial for what he did to me until he's (probably not going to be) released from his sentence there.

Just FYI for any reading, if a dangerous dog approaches you, a shot into the dirt will scare the shit out of it 9.5 times out of 10. Dogs are dumb, innocent creatures, are many times when they act like this, they view it as "defending their turf".

But while that may save my life, IF my bullet goes through and IF it hits an uninvolved person, my life becomes significantly harder after the fact.
Now if it were a choice between significant overpenetration (10mm extreme penetrators) and not enough "stopping power" (.25acp hollowpoints), sure. But there are plenty of viable options that retain all of the lethality without any of the overpenetration.

Minimags are pretty good but I still have probably a 1-2% dud rate. Federal Automatch is 3-5%, CCI Blazer is <1%, Remington Golden Bullet is ~15%, and I swear to christ Thunderbolts are damn dear 30% dud rate.
