In my neck of Maryland there lies the remains of a WWII naval base(pic related) There is: a three story hospital, a couple of dormitories, a boarding school, and a few really big houses from the previous landowners on like a hundred acre + fenced off area. I could definitely play STALKER there.

In western Howard county there is an abandoned mill town called Daniels that is right outside ellicott city. There is an intact church with a cemetary, sixty year old cars, houses, etc. The town was flooded and never rebuilt so it's a great place. The best part is its totally legal to explore the area.

We were operating 15 miles south from Shipping port nuclear site in PA.
This was after the 3rd world war had ended. Funny - wasn't much of a war.
More like flashes of light in key strategic places.
The personnel that ran the site had long gone for shelter and put the plant into
emer shutdown mode. Part of their dooms day protocols. Its a good thing.
3 mile wasn't so lucky. That whole region is a million ticks an hour.
We had been on foot ranging for 3 days in search of good hunting, food, edible plants
and fuel. You would think that 9 months after a limited nuclear exchange there would be
something left.... Nothing. Most of the people in the cities are turning to cannibalism.
Stocks of food gave out pretty fast because of looting.
Most guard units did that looting. Yeah We stay away from the cities, most of them look
like something from a video game. I been to Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Erie. Erie was
the nicest one but thats mainly due to the count of the water glowing. Pittsburgh is
cannibal fortress full of insane reavers and Cleveland...Cleveland is the worst.
One night We caught some cannibals trying to stalk us one night just before sun down,
it was hot but you could smell their body odor and and their cigarettes. One rule of bush
craft is no smoking. I'm a Hound and so is my buddy that I'm with.
We found a place to hold up for the night, an old office building. This was on the way
out of Akron.
We heard them tramping around. They were quiet but not quiet enough. We could see their
flashlights in the pitch black darting around. down the main hall. We waited until they
passed the doors and the hallway just became wall. They didn't have anywhere to go and their
flash lights we darting from doorway to doorway. I was shocked that they still had batteries
for their lights. We picked them off in a burst of violence from our Ar pattern rifles.
As we were going through their belongings and and figuring out what parts from their weapons
we wanted to take, we heard it.
We both Froze and we both knew that it wasn't any animal we had ever heard. It sent shivers up
my spine. My buddy ran into one of the offices to look out the window to see what made the noise.
I continued to go through the cannibals shit, These guys were cannibals but of the negroid type.
That made the kills all the more sweeter. I checked their mouths for gold and traded metals.
The one groid had a cobra pistol, which I pocketed.
As my compatriot was coming back from the window I asked him what he had seen... His reply was
...its coming. I said whats coming. My back tingling from fear, excitement and adren...BOOOMM
Something or rammed the door to the building which was 3 floors down from where we were.
What ever it was...It was Big and it was heavy. I said to Gnome, well wtf is it, he replied
I don't fucking even know man and I can tell from his voice that this was some serious shit
that was coming. Story book shit.
We had to think fast. I took the lights that the nigger cannibals had on them and set them up
so the light was facing down the hall pretty much sprinting back and forth just placing the
things so it would blind whoever or whatever was coming up the stairs. I took the one military
grade grenade that I had and wedged it inbetween the rails of the steps. If we couldn't kill
this thing with bullets we wanted to get it with what we had left. Gnome set his 20 inch AR
up ready to take shots at this thing, he was laying his mags out and we were pretty much scared
shitless at this point. The thing was down stairs wrecking shit around, looking for us.
Gnome was getting itchy, and I was too. My stomach was rumbling because we hadn't eaten in 12 hours.
We had some spam and packaged tuna and crackers but we had only had a chance to eat some cattails and
some wild onions - hardly a meal. I just wanted some acorn coffee. The shit is good and it will make
you go if you know what I mean.
We snapped to attention - it was on the stair well, climbing, you could hear its eldrich sounding meat
appendages slapping onto the floor..almost like the sound of a wet walrus falling off of a table on to
a floor. This was out of a fucking horror movie. We couldn't believe what we saw. It was almost as if
a wild hog had mated with a bulldog and a human....it was pink and had a face but it was all those things.
It walked in 4 appendages. The light shone on the beast to illustrate its skin folds and overbored hair
follicles.
We were both stricken...This was not an earthly thing that we were looking at. I heard the shot. And as if
in slow motion I looked over at my buddy he was not even aiming - just shooting with his mouth wide and his
eyes wider. I will never forget the look of horror on his face. Upon seeing his face I turned to my front
almost with the same expression and started dumping my weapon out.
We could see this thing on full display now and it was writhing in pain as we peppered it with 556. I yelled
to Gnome - load the lead rounds...he looked over his H-rig for the magazine that held them. We started casting
Lead rounds when our supplies started to dwindle. They won't go through a vest but they will make you wish you
had one on.
He slammed the mag home Just as I pulled the cord on the grenade....whoom. The explosion was contained behind
the beast as it impacted on the things backside. Not close enough to be fatal however - it tore the hind legs
of the monster out from underneath it. This was our chance - with the THING howling is pain, Gnome took aim
it head and let out the lethal shots.
When we examined the skinjob - Soft ball sized exit wounds were found in the rear of its head. I will never
forget the smell that it gave off..as if someone had mixed piss and humus together.
That was the first time that we encountered a Skin Walker.
And it wasn't the last.
