Just bought this beauty.
Quick question, can I run normal modern 12 guage birsshot through this?
>>30020862
Before you run anything through it, get it checked out professionally.
>>30020892
Why? I inspected the breech and barrel and everything looked good.
>>30020919
What's the chamber cut for then?
>>30020949
What do you mean by this
>>30020983
Lol
>>30020990
he is trying to say that if you have checked it out you should know what gauge its in
>>30020949
Is it cut for 2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 3/4, 3, 4 1/2 shells?
While we're at it, what's the choke set for?
>>30020999
Well it's 12 guage.
>>30021031
I don't know these things. How do I tell?
>>30021048
Buy the biggest 12 gauge shell and shoot it.If it blows you can't shoot those.
>>30021069
Okay I'll report back.
>>30021048
You take it to a certified gunsmith sice you didn't even know 12g came in different lengths and brings your barrel and chamber diagnostic into question
The gunsmith would probably use a

You would have to measure the muzzle for choke
>>30021158
The nearest gunsmith is an hour drive away.
I did know they came in different lengths just didn't to now what the chamber cut was.
>>30021158
>>30021209
Also mine is a 1903 and doing some research it seems those were all 2 3/4
>>30020862
all 1897s are safe for standard modern loads with 2 3/4" shells.
>>30021266
Don't take that as fact. The 2 1/2 was still in use, and still is in some countries. Plus this gun had been around for 113 years, bubba could of gotton a right gooder idear. It won't hurt the gun if the chamber was cut deeper, but never use steel shot. I wouldn't use steel shot period in that especially with an unknown choke.
>>30021069
Well hes not wrong.
Is this the choke?
>>30021478
yes
>>30021478
if you cant fit a dime in the barrel then its a full choke.
>>30021499
>>30021547
So what should I keep in mind knowing this
>bought a gun
>did absolutely zero research and doesn't know basic terms
This is why companies like I.O. still exist.
>>30021575
I walked into a gun show, saw it, and said "I want that"
And my girlfriend said "get that"
So I got it.
>>30021547
that it going to have a somewhat tight spread.
Some people my steer you away from slugs, i dont believe it matters.
It changes nothing other than the density of your spread.
>>30021614
I don't plan on using slugs. I have a mossy 500 20 with a slug barrel.
I'm just wondering about what sorts of buckshot or game load to stay away form.
>>30021570
The Full choke was, for decades, the waterfowl hunter’s best friend. With a bore reduction of just about 0.035-inch, this tight choke allowed a shotgunner to hit geese and ducks at the 40-yard mark and beyond. The tradeoff with a choke this tight is that it’s usually too tight for close-in targets, those closer than 25 yards. You’ll either miss because the pattern hasn’t widened enough to hit a moving target, or you’ll absolutely annihilate a target with an almost literal fistful of lead. Such a hit is fine on a clay target, but if you’re a hunter looking for a pheasant dinner, you could be picking shot out of a pile of shredded meat.
TL;DR It's pretty tight pattern shot and it will work with slugs but I'd stick to buck or bird shot and avoid steel since it'll wear an older barrel faster
>>30021614
Most slugs can squeeze down with the "rifling" on them. Copper jacketed ones have far less give.
Either way you're trying to shove a quarter through a dime sized whole, needless stress on the muzzle
>>30021660
you can use what ever kind you want, no restrictions.
>>30021865
Okay senpai. Thanks.
This thing is so massive. Makes the nugget look okay in comparison.
>>30022197
how did you pay, i would like to get an exposed hammer shotgun.
>>30022532
Three fiddy desu. It seemed like a good deal so I hopped on it.
>>30021604
Can't think of a better reason to get something if I'm honest.
>>30022197
like others have been saying, I'd avoid steel shot.
