The FAL was better than the pile of ass that was the M14, but then again, so was the SA-80.
Doesn't work well in the sand. Receiver has trouble with cracking while full fun, .308 is hard to handle full auto, many step process to machining the receiver

The Soviets were using 7.62x39 in fucking 1945 with the RPD, and we're standardizing a battle rifle in fucking 1959.

Excessivly long barrel, Heavy weight when loading, issues being used as a SAW failed to provide adequate suppressive fire, isn't compact for paratroopers (Folding stock variants never issued). A better Garand variant would be the BM-59 which is basically a Garand rechambered in 7.62 NATO, Had was more compact in the paratrooper and served well as a SAW as the Mk.IV. To be honest, the Italians did a better job improving the garand than the Americans did.

Its accuracy is acceptable for a fighting rifle. A DMR probably not so much.
The biggest issue is supply chain. Modern FAL's in the US are really only made by DSA. The supply chain absolutely is a single point of failure. Lots of folks are making AR-10's along Knight SR-25/ DPMS pattern these days. I went with a FAL and should have bought the AR-10. Eventually I will get one.
