Apparently the soviets in Afghan really liked chicom rigs, they would often stretch them to fit 6 magazines and it eventually went on to inspire their own lifchik rig (and dozens of other chest rigs stemming from that design)

An artillery colonel that served there told me stories about how he got an order to decimate a Kishlak (it's like a small nomadic village) because a soviet column was blown up on the road that passed near them.
Their view was that the local tribe controls the area and nothing happens there without their approval. He did this with pleasure.
The soldiers really hated the mujaheds for their savagery.
For example, a soldier would go missing after going to buy gandja or to meet ''women''.
Finding him crusified with his dick cut off and put inside his mouth was usual but there were worst things like the blody tulip. It's when they skin the guy from the legs up in 3-4 lines and tie up the skin over his head, leaving him to suffocate inside his own skin. The mutilated body of the missing guy would be left near their base at night to intimidate the others. Of course instead of intimidation that would just cause them to massacer the afghans even harder.
