But it's probably unit marking so other tanks can identify them at a glance

Its the marking the British used on tanks in the 1st and 2nd World war and probably after
>>
>>29997158
All British tanks had them during that period and they weren't applied while in the field.

The red and white stripes on tank horns were introduced in the field in a hurry in 1918 when it became apparent that the Germans were putting overhauled captured British tanks into service and were intended initially for artillery and infantry (and other tanks). Not all Mk IVs had the cab roof painted as well but Mk Vs and V*s that had such stripes on the horns also appear have one on the cab roof. One can only conclude that the addition of stripes on the roof was for the benefit of aerial recognition and were painted in the factory. I would be interested to hear what other different ideas there were given that red and white had already been selected. Red and white stripes were also used in WW2 for purposes of recognition by aircraft but later replaced with an American style white star (although often painted slightly turned by Commonwealth troops presumably to make the point that they were not American).

A brief history of Tank markings development, from TNA AIR 1/1074/204/5/1665, is as follows:
At FRICOURT on Thursday 28th February 1918 a number of Aeroplane and tank trials were carried out. One was an experiment on 'marking', the three in the trial were:
1. A White Square on the "cab".
2. An ordinary aeroplane marking on the "cab". (roundal used in early WW2).
3. A White square with a Black centre on the "cab".
The report was: "The aeroplane flew over at heights varying between 1,000 and 200 feet, and report that there is not much to choose between between the 3 markings. If anything the WHITE square with a BLACK centre is the most conspicuous. All the markings appearedvery small to the pilots."
The report was dated 2.3.1918.
It appears they were not happy with these markings as 46 Sqn. RFC was involved in further experiments on 4.3.1918. The markings on this trial were:
1. Red/White/Red (1ft/2ft/1ft).
2. White/Red/White (1ft/2ft/1ft).
3. White (1ft)/Red (6in)/White (1ft) with blue square in centre touching red stripe each side/Red (6in)/White (1ft).
The report concluded that: "All three pilots who carried out the tests report that No.2 marking is most suitable. This can be seen without goggles up to 1800ft."
This is followed by a letter to GHQ from Elles, dated 11.3.1918, that this is the marking to be used.
The actual drawings of where the tank markings are to be put on the Mk.IV/V and "Whippet" are sent out in a letter dated 5.5.1918 to GHQ (with copies to Armies, RAF and Tank Units)from Tank Corps. The actual drawings are dated 29.4.1918.

It's the colours of the royal armour corps, it was used on British tanks from their creation until the cold war.
