A few years ago (2005) when I was going to move to the US, I considered joining a group like this, since I spent from 2001 to 2004 in the Australian Infantry, I am familiar and comfortable with the Steyr AUG pattern rifle, so I thought I'd buy one for about $5000US at the time since they were all pre-tax, then buy an AR mag well style stock, so I could share magazines with my group.
As for spare parts is doesn't really matter unless you have two of the same gun with different problems to cannibalise one to get a single operational rifle.

The British put more than a token effort into keeping American theirs. They were fielding full-sized armies and had generals onnafield. The colonies were an enormous breadbasket for them with seemingly limitless resources -- food, gold, metal, slave labor, cotton, etc. Losing America, for them, would be like Los Angeles losing the rest of California's water supply. Britain had arguable control of the sea, at that point, so the French aid was a bit more limited than we are led to believe in the 21st century, but it was a definite boon to the colonies.
Although the Brits didn't see the war of 1776 as more than an assisted peasant uprising. They still considered the colonies part of Britain until the war of 1812.
