Alright, /k/ommandos, time for your first annual eeeeeeeeeee test. Please tell me if you notice any particular drops in volume as you slide the bar. Report back here with the hertz range(s) that you find most difficult to hear.

http://plasticity.szynalski.com/tone-generator.htm

The purpose of this test is to determine if those of our ilk have a propensity to lose hearing in certain ranges based upon their favored calibers, or certain scenarios you may remember when you neglected to protect your only always-on, 360 degree sense.

Please include with your report what caliber was being fired during your most memorable acquisition of eeeeeeeeeeeeee.

(Other context appreciated but not necessary. Additionally, please let us know the highest frequency you are able to detect.)

It cannot be an annual event if it the first time.
>>
>>29980855
20hz to right around 16,000

is that normal?
>>
>>29980895
It is normal that as you age it becomes more and more difficult to detect higher frequencies. I'm 28 and have difficulty detecting above 18,000 hz (with both ears on, oddly it's lower for each individual ear). I also notice a distinct drop in volume at the 5,500 hz and 9,500 hz ranges.
>>
>>29980855
30hz to roughly 17khz. I can still hear a faint buzz around 17,400~
Though my cheap headphones might be limited as well.

>>29980895
Most adults can't hear higher than 17khz, you're not out of the ordinary. Usually the younger you are the better your ears are at picking up higher frequencies.
>>
18,500 or so is when i lost it, im 23 btw
>>
Pretty sharp roll off at 150 and 13k.
>>
>>29980962
Anyone else noticing drops in volume at particular ranges though they can hear better both above and below that range?
>>
>>29980855
I stopped hearing it at 15,300hz.
I always wear ear pro, last time was 30 rounds of 7.62x54r.
>>
9500-11000 HZ was quiet for me, then picked back up after
>>
Would headphones affect this?

I could hear the entire spectrum. 1 was a very faint pounding and the max end was still ear piercing
>>
>>29981050
Yes. You can only hear frequency ranges that your headphones are able to produce accurately.
>>
>>29980940
>>29981008

This is the OP, here's my results as an example:

>distinct drop in volume between 5,440 and 5,550
>distinct drop in volume between 9,400 and 9,500
>right ear seems most affected in both situations, probably due to lifting off my ear pro while getting a cheek weld with a .308.
>lowest: 4hz
>highest: 18,000
>>
I can barely hear 19hz all the way to 20,154hz.

I take it that's good. What do I win?
>>
>>29980855
I could hear it from 1 to 20,154 but then again im not exactly the most traveled person.
>>
>>29981050
>>29981066
OP here, I have decent headphones with a tendency to favor bass. I'm going to try with an earbud type and see if I can hear higher.

>>

21 years old, no tinnitus.
>>
>>29981066
Yeah I was mostly asking if you could have too good of headphones that let you hear what you normally couldn't

I have a fucking headache from the 20154 and I assume that's not normal for normal people. I don't have bad hearing but I don't have fucking sonar.
>>
>>29981119
I swear at 1hz i could hear like a siren sound if i listened hard enough.
>>
>>29981106
Also noted that I can hear what seems to be a frequency to 18hz, but below that it almost sounds like I'm just hearing my speakers moving.
Below 9hz I cant hear anything tho.
>>
>>29981129
Some audio frequencies can give you a headache even if your ears aren't detecting sounds, which does seem a bit weird.
>>
>>29981107

nvm miss read the instructions. If I have the volume higher I can hear above 16,000 hz. If I have the volume the same across all ranges it tapers off.

:(
>>
>>29980895
I'm the same.

20hz to 16,000, then it drops off completely.
>>
>>29981146
I did hear it, it blew my damn eardrums out

>>
>>29981067
>>29981100

So with my earbud type headphones I stopped being able to hear around the 16,000 range, but also noticed an aberration above 20,000 where the tone actually became lower and audible again. Interestingly, the fade out areas i noticed in my good headphones seemed to not happen, but I'm guessing that could be because the sound is dirtier/less "focused" with the cheap buds.
>>
>>29980855

First eeeeeeeeeexperience was with a firecracker with a bad fuse. Tried throwing it way out into a pond and it exploded right as it went past my ear on release.

Next would be a .357 fired in a covered outdoor range. Forgot ear pro like a dumbass. Other than than nothing else.

Can hear 35hz to 16,337hz at moderate volume.

>>
There might be a dip in my right ear at 9000 or so, but it seems I can hear everything else just fine. As far as I know though, I don't have tinnitus.
>>

I am 31, and hear from about 200 to 14500
I shoot .308 and .45, but I use earpro obsessively.
Thing is, I need to preserve what hearing I have left, since my life so far has already dicked it up a fair bit.

no drops in volume but I can't hear jack shit below 200hz or above ~14500 because thats pretty much right on the octave pair of the tinnitus noise in my right ear. can't hear the mosquito ringtone below 16khz because my tinnitus is too fucking loud
>tfw only 22

but I'm using laptop speakers that's max volume is like 10% of earbuds/speakers (which is probably why i have tinnitus)
>>
at what volume do i do this test?
>>
>>29980855
Volume drops dramatically for me from about 200 to about 260 Hz. That's the only valley, otherwise I can hear from 50 to 15,300Hz.

I did a lot of upland game hunting with a 12 gauge loaded with birdshot. I've shot all major calibers my entire life, but at early ages the accepted earpro was to chew on a wad of paper towel and stuff it in your ears. This may have incurred some degradation. But the only real eeeeeeeeee I can recall was when we took a bunch of guns upstate, forgot to pack earpro, and ole dad insisted that .30-cal carbine wasn't that loud, to shut the fuck up and stop bellyaching. I probably shot it two dozen times (while seriously not wanting to, I was like 12, and it hurt like hell).
>>
>>29981938
I should specify that I'm 36, and a decade of running a cement mixer and riding motorcycles might dilute my data.

No prob with the bass sounds; can hear from 1 Hz to a little over 17,500Hz, at which point the sound is fucking painful. I have a weeeeird drop of volume around 5k to 5,800/6k.

Hearing range 27-20000 I can hear above it but it sounds like the random ringing I get in my ears all the time. I've dealt with it since I was a kid. I have to turn the volume up to hear the stuff at the end.

Right ear is most affected by tone drops
2300-3000 is lightly dropped by my right ear. Barely noticeable.

Just became a funz owner around 3 months ago. 5.56mm and 9mm.
Had a wireless mono-phone headset from the ages of 15-19, did a lot of gaming.
When people speak into my right ear I have a harder time understanding them, especially when my ears start ringing for no reason.

Either I fugged my ears as a kid or its my sinuses. (allergies)

Audiologist here. Ask me anything.
>>
>>29983207
Whats the healthy range to hear through?
Any way to unfuck the ears?
Any way to retrain listening?
>>
>>29983272
Normal human hearing range is 20-20000 Hz. However, there is a sudden drop in hearing thresholds in the ultra low and ultra high Fz range. In terms of the hearing test, we typically look at 250-8000 Hz, which are pretty important for speech understanding.

No way to unfuck ears -- just protect your shit better in the future. That, or shell out $2000-6000 for some hearing aids.

There are some aural rehab programs you can use , like LACE, but they are generally meant for people with hearing aids and cochlear implants.
>>
>>29983207
>Ask me anything.

Why aren't hearing aids more comfortable? I could never fucking stand mine.

>Here, jam this microphone dick in your earhole and get used to it
>>
Past 17k I hear nothing.
>>
>>29983362
Three things:
1) Acoustics. Some of the acoustic options available are dependent upon your hearing loss. Some of the more comfortable options (custom molded) are not appropriate for people with good low Fz thresholds. The sound quality is the first priority.

2. Materials. Have to strike a balance of durability and comfort. The industry has gone the way of durability (less cost over time, higher intrinsic value of the device, etc.). They made this decision because...

3. Most people can handle the hearing aids in their current form with little to no discomfort. You either are an outlier, or your audiologist was shit and didn't work with you to make them more comfortable.

How long has it been since you tried hearing aids? A lot has changed in the past 6-8 years.

>>29980855
Most headphones and speakers cant go below or above human spectrum, and many have cut offs, unless you have really nice gear, you are hallucinating most of the sounds, check your specs on your soundgear
My headphones go from 20hz to 20khz

Meanwhile i could hear 1hz to 20154, despite my headphones not being able to do this, 2k 4k and 12k is when it has huge fucking jumps in volume, tapering off at 19k despite being very clearly audible until 20, where it just became a high pitched whir, my phones probably supplied me up until 20100, because that is when i started to question whether or not i could still hear it because high pitched tones cause temporary ear ringing at super high pitches

Very light tinnitus, visual snow, and a 1/4 chance to be able to hear a good amount above human averages.

Don't get envious though, im literally half blind, and have allergies bad enough that i almost got hospitalized for an upper respitory infection once, and get atleast one per year.
