I joined the naval reserve about a million years ago, and am finally getting onto a ship!
But I have some questions about preparing for it, and living aboard:
* Is there anything I should bring other than the obvious? (uniforms, laptop maybe, a good book, military paperwork/training packages, extra razors, etc.) Sewing kit? Extra velcro straps for attaching things to other things? Safety glasses? A tub of varnish? My lucky mug? A stack of 360 games? My own STANAG magazines? A variety of audio jack adaptors?
* I'm a fag; I'm no SJW or anything, constantly getting asked about slaying pussy and about girlfriends back home annoys me. Should I get it out of the way and say I'm gay early on, or am I just gonna get beat up or raped or discharged for "Lack of Camaraderie" or something?
* While on ship, other than my job, is there anything I should pay extra attention to keeping done or away from? I already know the rules about making coffee for the mess, but is there any other typical ship etiquette I should know of? I don't smoke and I'm not That Guy who'll carry around cartons of smokes just to make friends, btw.

Do they actually inspect personal electronics? I could understand raising an eye at .rar crackers on the desktop, but when I was on a training platform, not only was there literally no EMSEC policy but the actual ship's laptop as a stand-in for both the ship's office and CCR had a drawn furry mascot as its background
I've also never ever heard of HD inspections, just "do not use your laptop/phone in anywhere except your mess or your bunk"

I would sooner believe that there is simply not wifi on a ship (because even on a civilian ship, that's kinda insane because of the metal structure and close quarters -- why not just hardline it?) than that there is some dude with a gorillion network monitoring tools open 24 hours a day to make sure no one is illegally connecting to the wifi, or doing anything illegal even if connected legally

Despite having separate networks for combat and SCADA devices, they are going to find it suspicious as fuck when you come along with a laptop that's solely meant for penetration testing. I've read over EMSEC policies and have talked to people in CCRs and such, and there is nothing I've seen or heard to imply that there's WiFi on ships. Basic network architecture and security sensibilities should tell you that it's senseless to have WiFi on a big metal ship anyway, because of the necessity of tons of repeaters and the ability for people outside the ship to gain access to your network through any physical holes in the ship (like, say, the bridge wings, port holes, etc)
this said, I'm not amurrkan so idk, maybe US network security policies are a little jank. Cuz like I said, I've had coworkers at the unit tell tales of having to buy new 360 controllers because wireless ones got banned, and they advise to download all the stuff i can beforehand because there is straight up no internet other than what can be skimmed from land as you pass settled areas. (which isn't hard -- I've gotten coffee shop wifi from the literal middle of a bay, and even at home, I used to leech from a place pretty far away and got a good signal because my apartment building is very tall so I have clear lines of sight to offices/malls with communal networks.)

if the ship has wifi on a mess deck or wardroom it won't connect to anything deemed sensitive in the first place. things like communications systems, encryption, and naval messages are handled on entirely different, physically seperate networks. It won't even connect to things like NIPR.
if someone wanted to access those things they'd have to enter the ship and physically interact with the necessary equipment.
