There are many dimension to every conflict. For the US, the domestic repercussions to taking Rhodesia's side in the Bush War would've been prohibitive. Also, apartheid's actually a shitty, unstable, racist system that prevents black progress.

Apartheid isn't something that lasts forever unlike a dictatorship that would result in an unstable shift of power; Zimbabwe Rhodesia, the US, and South Africa proved that due to having the same rights as others even do you have to overcome difficulty, can be gained support while stabilizing easily over time. I'd rather live in an apartheid society were I'm guranteed earning my rights back unlike a dictatorship where my rights are permanently taken and expressing them results in death along with massive disarmament of the people.
