I'm under no illusions that it was the best anime ever, but it's one of my favorites. It's really a sports anime rather than an outright /k/ anime. Given the limitations of the sport it's natural certain aspects aren't as true to life, though it gives a lot more love to the technical aspects than most shows would. Overall it's got a lot of heart and the characters are pretty likeable.

I actually thought of a decent way to have it be "balanced", and allow tanks of all size to realistically compete. Limit the number of tanks allowed into a match based on tonnage. Say, 500 tons. This way, light tanks can be competitive because you can take more of them. I say 500 tons because that's about a company's worth of medium tanks.

One of the big themes of the series is that the regular, big teams that usually win pretty much load up on the biggest, meanest near-end war tanks and use rigid doctrine that works, but is boring. My biggest issue with GuP is that in real life, tanks fucking explode violently when hit with fast moving projectiles in the wrong places. All it would take is for one accident to cause the tanks engine to go up in flames and a bunch of screaming, on fire school girls would come spilling out of the hatchway before asphyxiating on the ground.
Tanks, particularly WWII tanks, can be every bit as dangerous to their operators as to the enemy.

Well, the manga explains why they didn't blew up and ended up with that murder bonering scene. Apparently, its set in some not so far future which the tanks used for sporting purposes are lined with a strong ass carbon compound that prevents the shells from penetrating the armor and killing everybody inside.
