I want an AK pretty bad. Any variants you recommend? I'd like one chambered for 5.56 since I live in 'Murica and think it's prudent to fire a NATO cartridge (Century Arms M85 or M90, Arsenal SLR-106, or a WASR3) but I'm concerned about reliability since 5.56 is high pressure and shaped in a way the AK platform is not designed for. I'm more concerned for reliability than general performance, otherwise I'd get an AR. Thoughts? Or redpill me on 5.56 and convince me to load out with glorious 7.62xComrade.
If you want 5.56 get an AR. AK rifles suck at anything but 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r.

I see no reason why a 5.56 AK wouldn't run perfectly fine. I have an AK in 7.62x51mm and it runs like a scalded ape. One that takes standard ar15 mags would be especially nice.

7.62x39 is as cheap as 5.56x44/.223 nowadays, and both magazines cost just as much.

Vepr. they are cheaper than arsenals and are really good and accurized. if you want to use standard AK mags though, you have to install a bullet guide which isnt hard.
I also thought as you, but bought a chrome lined AR for $600. I had dreams of cheap AK pistols and WASR 10's but... it's over m8.
Just accept the cheap ass AR-life. You can make pistols or even 7.62x39 variants for under $550. Just buy solid magazines.

Ive heard some really great things about the Zastava M90. they take AR magazines and have a gas regulator which improves recoul and accuracy. Its probably the best choice for a 5.56 AK right now without paying out the ass.

Correct my if I'm wrong, but isn't 5.56 not that SBR friendly in terms of performance? I know in the ARs the 20" barrels give the round its fragmentation properties, whereas in the 14" barrels this doesn't occur.
With the 7.62x39, shorter barrels don't affect ballistics much. Not to mention, it's pretty much the poor mans' .300 BLK. Can't say how 5.56 performs in AK platforms, but I love running my 7.62x39 (M92) and 5.45 (Bulgy '74) AKs over the 5.56 AR I used to own.

.300BLK's design goal was 7.62x39 ballistics in something that fit in standard AR mags. There's no reason to use it in anything but an AR.

To elaborate:
NPAP = semi-auto variant of the Zastava M70. The M70 is a 7.62x39 gun.
What you probably have is a Zastava PAP M90 with a STANAG adapter.
Zastava doesn't chrome-line any of their barrels.
