Post weapons with side-mounted magazines, for they look funky.

Also, what are the general upsides of side-mags, and why have they been abandoned?
From what I understand, in SMGs with long magazines it was done to make sure the mag doesn't get in the way when prone, and some rifles (namely the FG-42) are overall shorter than they would've been with a conventional magazine position.
These days they're no longer used by anyone because balance and ambi, but wouldn't an RPK or IAR-style automatic rifle benefit from a side-mag? Those RPK 45-rounders look like they get in the way.
Furrer M-25, a Swiss toggle-lock LMG, the mag is on the right so the assistant/spotter does the reloading.
