I'm looking to buy a full-sized, metal framed 9mm handgun. Budget of ~$1000. I've never had a pistol before, but I have an AR15. What does /k/ recommend?

If you like the SP01, Kygunco has a few limited versions with night sights and a threaded barrel for 636/656. They have it in black or OD green. There will be also an urban gray one coming out later this year.

Sigs and CZs are both excellent and proven. CZs are sorta complex in the FCG, and the machining looks rough, but they have it where it counts.
double stack 1911 in 9mm. STI's might be out of your budget though.
I'd suggest taking a look at steel framed EAA Witness. It is a very nice CZ75 clone. Not sure your intended use, but they have a range of builds. I used an Elite Match in league. Interchangeable uppers, so the same frame and ergo for .22/.38 super/9mm/.45/10mm. Have heard good things about the polymer framed ones as well, but never tried them myself.
Sphinx tops the budget, or a metal Jericho 941. Glocks, Sigs, M&P, FN, etc are all good. HK P30 of your favored flavor would be a great gun.

Out of the 9mm's I own, its my least favorite, guess I don't fall into the CZ 75 fanboy crowd. I was actually thinking of selling it to someone who wants a project. Mechanically its solid, just needs refinishing
