All fudds are hunters, but not all hunters are fudds. I think it has to do with a narrow view of why you need a gun. If you believe rifles are only for hunting it is easy to develop the fudd mentality.

A Fudd is someone who thinks guns' only legitimate civilian use case is hunting and other sporting purposes, and that you should only use/be allowed to have guns meant for that.
In this case guns for hunting corresponds to firearms that are about two technological generations old. So bolt guns, pump/break shotguns, and big fuckoff revolvers. Sometimes older semi automatics.
They also tend to have a fixation with classical peripherals, eg wood stocks.
To them modern semiautomatic firearms like synthetic clad ARs are for the military and police and civilians shouldn't have them or shouldn't be allowed to have them. Because you don't need a military assault weapon to shoot a million bullets and blow the deer into tiny scraps you can't even eat, I tell ya hwut. In my experience the only vegans I've ever met were the people who've lived all their lives in an urban environment, who rarely see nature apart from on their wallpaper or the city park, and who'd only connection with what they eat comes from the store they buy it from.
