Bought this three weeks ago for $365, it's my first gun. Been wanting one of these for the longest time, there's just something about them that makes them so attractive to me. Anyways, if you own some, post 'em.
Some more pics of my 5906. I'm sure I could have found one with less scratches and dings, but it was being sold close to me so I said fuck it. Any ideas on how I can refinish it myself?
Here's the condition of the sights, is this acceptable?
looks nice OP, have you shot it yet?
How many magazines did you get with it?
The rear sights looks kinda dinged up a little bit though
I've been looking forever for one in 40 with the shrouded sight like you have but no luck, only the novak style. Good buy OP, solid guns.
>>29920979
I've yet to shoot it. Only came with one mag but I'm looking at purchasing more; one brand I saw online was by Keepshooting (I think its called?), though I'm concerned about reliability isssues since they aren't factory. The sights are what give me the feeling I fucked up on buying it since they don't look too great
>>29921039
I want to collect as many as I can before they're completely inmpossible to find. Last year I had the chance to get a 5906 TSW from a fellow /k/unt but couldn't because I didn't have proof of residency- I lived in CA at the time, but now in AZ. Damn CA laws, still butt flustered about it.

they even make 20 round mags still
>>29920732
Had one of these from my dad as a graduation gift. I miss it. Gave it back to the old man while I was out of state, when I came back for it he had sold it. Ended up giving me the money but damn.
I have a 39, 459, and 4506-1, and had a 6906 and 915; the old S&W autos fit me better than most pistols, probably best out of all.
I want to get a 5906TSW and go full retard with it; action job from S&W Performance Center (they still offer it), good sights, cerakoted so black slide/OD frame, nice light, custom holster
Never touched one but interested. Hands down the most overlooked double action semi autos desu
>>29925454
One of my managers from my previous job had a 645, asked if he would sell it to me, told me to fuck off. I want to get a 6906 by the end of the year but if I can't come across one I'm going to look into the lionheart lh9c. They still offer? That gives me a woody. I want to replace my sights but I'm shit out of luck. Impossible to find for the adjustable sights.
>>29925527
Try them out before they're out of circulation. I pray S&W brings them back
>>29920732
Nice early Pre-MIM 5906.
>>29920732
I go back and froth about getting one of these bad boys
Its fucking huge

>>29925906
Im eyeing one of these myself
>>29925906
It is, friend owns one, it shoots so smooth.
>>29925818
The 6906 has the same problems as small 1911's do, not nearly as reliable as the full sized pistol it's derived from. Also you cannot ease the slide forward and chamber a new round, will FTF, and they really only like standard ball
>>29925454
this guy again, check it out
>>29926034
Really? That's a bummer. Guess I'll have to look for a different carry piece.
>>29926044
Which model is the third? One of my lgs is selling one, was thinking about getting it. Nice collection btw
>>29926102
39-2, First Gen
>>29926059
They're not even really compact. Think of it as the Glock 19 to the 5906's Glock 17, roughly
After waiting 4+ months for someone to list either a 5906 or a 3913 in the classifieds, both end up being listed in the span of 3 days.
Funny how that works out.

I'm jelly of how clean your 59 looks. How do your sights look? Mine bother me...
>>29927146
^^^^^
They are dead bang reliable, very accurate, and comfy to shoot
>>29927167
I love it dude. After 10 thousand, 10 fucking thousand rounds, I had to send it for a new extractor and a new recoil spring.
S&W paid shipping both ways, and did the servicing for free. That created a very happy lifelong customer
>>29927164
Welcome, welcome. How do you clean your smiths? I ended up buying froglube, did I make a baddecision going with that? It feels really nice after applying it
>>29927204
Disassemble, soak in CLP, clean with patches / paper towel / q-tips
Lube with hoppes 9 / MPro7
Personally have no experience with froglube
>>29927183
Do you think s&w can offer a refinish?
>>29927228
I truly have no idea. With a stainless gun you could always polish it up yourself though
>>29927183
Mine is my go-to, am one of the half dozen or so people that has gigantic enough hands that it fits me perfectly. I'm really confident in it's reliability, too, since out of the 4000 or so rounds I have through it, 3500 were with no maintenance just to see if how far it could go. Only malfunction was with an underloaded plain lead reload
>>29927243
That's awesome. It truly fits my hand better than any 1911
>>29927222
Do you apply lube all over the gun, or just in the slide and frame?
>>29927294
Slide and moving trigger parts 2bh
>>29927315
Are yours used or did you buy them new back in the day?
>>29927363
4506 is from dad and the 3913 is from grandpa
Both were new when purchased

>>29927538
How is the bore?
>>29920732
remember to buy your 30 rounders
>>29927586
Do any of you guys know a good holster for a 5904 with the old adjustable sights?
I tried a Bianchi Shadow 2 but it was cut for the later sights.
Also I would die for 4506 and a 1026, these pistols are amazing. I hope S&W brings back support for them soon.
>>29927586
The dings are what bother me most. I feel like I sure as hell could have found one in better condition, but I was impatient. It is my baby, though
>>29927680
>>29927639
It's okay. They are tools, very nice ones at that
idk if this counts, but I got this 38s&w revolver for ~250 bucks the other day. Everything is smooth and solid, like it's not all rough and rusted or slack and about to fall apart. Especially considering that it's about 120 years old it's in really good shape
Only meh part is the sights are kinda crap but they're doable.
>>29927166
Yeah, the person I bought it from got his new and barely shot it. I lucked out there.
As for the sights, I didn't have too much of an issue. But, I'll say that out of all the handguns I have, I dislike the 5906 sights the most.
I love my smith autos, have a 915, 1076, 4513tsw, 4506, 5906, and a 4043
I feel the same way OP. There's just something about them, I fully intend on a collection some day.
>>29927134
bruh. story tiem about my 3913.
dad carried a 3913 when he was a detective and then a bigger framed 3rd gen (i dont remember which) when he went back to being a beat cop. apparently in the early 90s when he bought the 3913 he bought one for my mom (also a detective at a diff department) and she had trouble qualifying with it so she stuck with her s&w 357 (i also do not remember which, just seeing it all the time).
so instead of selling it, he put it back in the case and shoved it in the safe. a few months back we were finger fucking his pistols and he told me the story so i jumped on it. mint condition, only been fired a few times by my mom and came with 4 mags...$400. so i thought id be a fedora and get wood grips for it and it made the grip fuckhueg so i put the plastic grips back on. first time i took it out i forgot to oil it beforehand and keep getting ftf and fte issues, not realizing after 25 years of sitting in a case the oil would dry up. so i thoroughly douched it and oiled it and now it runs like a dream. by far my favorite gun.
/end csb
on a side note, i liked how the m&p9 i had shot but i have tiny hands so it was fucking huge to hold. i wish they would make a size in between the m&pc and m&p, like glock 19 sized. id be all over it.
>>29928418
I own this gun and you obviously wouldn't know this if you were borrowing it from someone else to shoot but the entire back grip is replaceable and inside the box they have a smaller one and fatter one exactly for this reason. It comes off by rotating the very bottom part of the grip and it does take a lot of force. I am a semi-manlet with tiny hands like you so I certainly went for the small one and it's perfect for me
>>29927183
>S&W paid shipping both ways, and did the servicing for free. That created a very happy lifelong customer
Damn that's cool as fuck. Remember some guy who shot a crazy amount through his m&p, I think it was 25,000 or 250,000 and S&W gave him a new gun when it broke or something like that.
Only gun from S&W I have is a shield
>>29920732
I've been thinking about getting one.
How is the trigger?
So me and my family (mom dad and brother) were really big into guns in the mid to late 90s and I absolutely loved these guns. I was 10-14 years old and I knew all the model numbers and calibers and all of that. They seemed to be all the rage (although maybe I was just blinded with my own faggotry) Then I stopped shooting guns and got away from shooting in general until I turned 30. Now I'm having the most nostalgic nostalgia ever reading this thread.
Was gonna buy an m&p or some shit but now I gotta buy one of these ole Smith autos.
I need to do my research again though. I can't remember these model numbers for shit.
>>29929299
SA has an absurd short reset, but the DA is a little heavy. They are rreally sweet shooters
>>29929452
>>29925527
this is your friend
>>29929452
Someone posted a chart which has all the models and what the numbers meant. It's a damn shame that they were discontinued, I'd take these over an m&p but I simply just prefer steel than polymer. Get one before they're completely out of circulation
>>29929472
>>29929504
Dat numbering system.
>>29929518
>mfw there's people that can actually remember all of this shit and can name off things by heart
Only thing I know is the entire sig line and that's it.
>>29920732
How hard is it to change out the grips?
Can you get aftermarket wood grips?
I like the look of it; but those black rubber grips (practical though they may be), aren't really doing it for me.
>>29925454
I've got a 5906 and have wanted a 4506 or 4516 forever. How does it feel in 45 ? The 5906 is a pussycat even with +P, shoot all day completely comfortable 'cause it's so heavy.
>>29929605
Simple from what ive seen on youtube. I don't know if wood were available for the 5906, they were for the earlier models. I don't like the hogue grips on mine, I plan to buy the original plastic. They're still being sold on brownells and midway usa I believe
>>29929639
Very tame, but I have fuckhuge hands so everything is pretty tame. Definitely softer shooting than a 1911, by just a little
No pics, but right now I've got a 1006 with adjustable sights and a 4506 with fixed.
I had a 3906 adjustable, but ended up selling it since mags were impossible to find(it takes 9 rounders, M39 8 rounders don't fit), and I never shot it after I got my Kahr K9.
Then, probably a week after I sold it S&W made a shitload of 3906 mags, and now they're everywhere.
>>29920732
>>29929719

>>29929605
not hard, they literally just slide off like changing the backstraps on an m&p, BUT in my experience the wood grips are way thicker than the plastic grips, i bought hogue untextured wood grips for my 3913. i basically wasted like 90 bucks because i didnt know how shitty it would make the gun.
>>29927547
OMG look at those tooling marks! I bet this POS doesn't even cycle, and if it does it probably shoots sparks from all the friction! Should have bought a superior Glock.
...j/k
>>29929573
>Only thing I know is the entire sig line and that's it.
I used to be pretty good with the sig models when i was younger too.
I think they have changed somewhat since the 90s though. Seems like sig offers each model number in more calibers than I remember from when i was a boy.
