What the fuck is the purpose of a cable tang?
>>
>>29912508
None other than a thin handle, I guess. If you ask me it's just another way chinese knifemakers can reduce manufacturing costs, and your knife won't last as long.
>>29912493
I would imagine so, I just searched "mora bushcraft" on google images and that was the prettiest one. I don't know much about Mora other than their high reputation.
>>
>>29912508
Cheaper to produce. Uninformed buyers dont know its a bad/dangerous idea. The only time it shouldnt be full tang is if uts a folding knife.

No. Google "mora x-ray".

Probably great, but you can't deny its not gonna be as sturdy as a full tang mora. As in they wont take the same amount of abuse as a full tang mora. Does that exist though?
>>
>>29912866
Nigga that's an upside down squid
>>
>>29912884
Moras aren't full tang. They're fifteen dollar knives that are 3/4 tang. It's an incredible knife for the cost and comparing a mora to an expensive full tang knife is asinine, a full tang offers a minuscule amount of improvement that doesn't justify the price unless you're actively trying to waste money.
>>
>>29912900
You're looking at it upside down

Website it came from said specifically "DRAGON MOTIF NECK KNIFE"

Also what does fire have to do with cthulu? Not as much as dragons I'll tell you.
>>
>>29912925
I wouldnt say miniscule amount of improvement. Well I guess it depends what you use it for. If you carry an axe or hatchet with you for hacking or batoning you can probably live with a non full tang. My own bad experiences with stuff like above, the cable tang that I prefer a fulk tang. Full tang doesnt have to be that expensive though.
>>
>>29912985
Mora knives are like 4 bucks a pop here in Sweden.

We don't (usually) even sharpen the fuckers, they're considered disposable. Once they got too dull they go in the box of trash knives in the garage and get used to scrape rust and pry apart shit.
I've broken about 6 or 7 of them.

None have broken at the tang, and all of them took very serious abuse before they broke.

The rat-tail tang is not a weak point of a Mora.
You'll snap the blade before the tang breaks.

The handle will crack if you use it too hard.
Thats designed as a fighting knife, you know, slashing people and sticking them.

If you slap it into a tree and baton it a couple times itll break, extra easily if you go tap tap to the bottom of the handle.

NO! Don't do that!
Keep one blade and stick to it.
Always carry it in the same pocket, preferably facing in the same direction.

Drawing the knife needs to be as quick and instinctive as blinking.
Rotating various different knives, or guns for that matter, ruins passive muscle memory training.

or if it's a kukri that's actually balanced.
Or a scandinavian knife unless you want to freeze your fingers off.

Full tang isn't all it's hyped up to be. Sure - a full tang knife is sturdier, but a properly made stick tang will last you a lifetime.
>>
>>29916420

>>

No. If it's that cold and you're not wearing gloves this is irrelevant.

Full tang is always the best option.
>>
>>29914985

>>29915792
Nope, first knife thread I've posted in honestly.
>>
>>29916446

partial tang =/= stick tang.

the answer is balance. A full tang (even when it's a tapered tang) cannot compare to a properly balanced stick tang, and don't you worry your pretty little head - it's not going to break.

stop being contrarian. having an unpopular opinion doesnt make you an underdog. sometimes it just means you are full of shit. a mora and similar chip sized knives can use a partial tang. a work knife should not. this isnt even considering that it takes more effort to make a partial tang than a full one
>>
>>29916527
Ok then,

if all other aspects of the two knives were the same, and the handle material was designed so as to wrap fully around for your fake cold weather scenario and whatever other hypotheticals you've never experienced might happen

explain when stick tang would be better, and why.

Other anon answered it best. Saves on material, impossible in folders.

Trial and error anon, keep practicing and once you fuck up enough you'll get it. Sharpen, try cutting, sharpen again, try cutting until you get it to cut decently, once you've got that you can move onto consistency and choosing your angles. Probably also helps if you start with a knife that's got a fairly straight edge.

Which one? Also aren't Buck folders meme-tier? I swear they're at every gas station, hardware store, and grocery store I see.
>>
>>29918395

Depends entirely on what you want. Buck 110 is solid as fuck. It's simple, it just fucking works. Can't be opened with one hand though, so no longer my choice for EDC

Lower end Spydercos are pretty great, made in China but who cares? I'd suggest the Tenacious. It's a damn good design, good steel, easily one handed openable, good length, not automatic/assisted opening.

CRKT m16 is pretty great. Haven't owned one but used them plenty. Easy to open one handed, loads of options for your blade length and type.

Cold Steel Finn Wolf is awesome. Get that Mora ok? If you like that knife and wonder "why in the fuck is there not a folding Mora? Why won't they take my damn money?" Well, this is it. It's a folding Scandinavian grind knife. It's stupid sharp. It's nigh on indestructible, the locks Cold Steel makes are fantastic. That Scandinavian grind makes it so easy to sharpen anyone can do it. Now for the bad stuff. It's Cold Steel, that might be a bad thing to you. The blade is thicker than I'd prefer. It's difficult to open one handed, the thumbstud kinda sucks.

I haven't actually bought the Mora, I was just looking for options for both fixed and folders, the Companion was the best.
I'm kinda picky about aesthetics, I'm a faggot I know. The Finn Wolf really tickles mah pickle though, the other ones are ugly except the Buck, but I simply don't wanna have one that can't be opened signle-handedly, even if it's difficult, practice always helps.
>>
>>29920481
That looks like a medieval murder weapon.

Nobody suspects a quiet young bard to have a dagger in his boot. Or for him to worship Daedric princes.
>>
>>29920499
Reading over this again, it seems really unclear. I have a bad habit of coming off unclearly when typing.

The Mora is the best fixed option.
The Finn Wolf, although it might be difficult to open, seems to be the best choice for folders.
I like the Buck but I want it to at least be possible to open with one hand. The Finn might be difficult, but at least it's possible, whereas the 110 is not.

Makes sense and I agree fully. I carry the Spyderco as my EDC, frankly I used to hate the way it looks. Then one day something clicked in my head and I love it like everyone else seems to. The goofy looking blade positioning is actually REALLY useful, you get the thumb right in there and have amazing control and ability to exert force. The crazy looking hole is an amazingly easy way to open the knife.

But, I never would have owned one before I suddenly liked them.

Finn wolf I keep in my backpack with all my shit in my car. It's a great knife to have around.

Everyone I know, myself included, who has ever bought a Mora has instantly and fully fallen in love. They're just awesome in so many ways, price included. If the same happens to you, you will definitely end up wanting a folding version of it.
>>
>>29920598
I'm not sure how to feel about the Mora Companion. It seems asinine to me to have a blade smaller than the handle on a fixed blade knife. Especially since the blade is not very wide. I haven't handled one in person, but I imagine the chunky handle would be hard to control the small blade with.
Also, do you happen to know if any major sporting/outdoor retail stores carry the CS Finn or Moras? I'd like to handle both IRL to decide which one I want to spend the money on.
>>
My everyday carry is a Kershaw 1735ST partially serrated 3" flip tanto.

My camping/hiking/big job knife is a Ka-Bar 1255 partially serrated 5.25" fixed tanto.

Can none of you open a buck 110 one handed ? I carried one when I was a teenager in my right back pocket with the blade up tip facing right, that way when you reach in your pocket you grab the blade. As soon As you clear your pocket give your hand a downward flick and the handle will swing right open.

Or deploy from a sheath the same way, by carrying it tip up in sheath .

Here's a video of it. Is it as convenient as a thumb stud ? No. But it works . And If you're going to carry a 110 you should know how to do this well.

https://youtu.be/DQKspJDDLvE
>>
>>29918439
Buy an opinel, cheap carbon steel that sharpens easily and it won't matter if you screw it up, and then just start trying. There are tons of videos out there . I just started learning as well.

Some tips from my experience
>learn to feel the existing bevel
>practice strokes with even pressure and angle
>do tip trailing strokes when finishing a knife
>use honing oil
>spend most of your time on course stones, seriously you can get it really sharp just using a rough one. The sharper it is going from course to smooth grit the less work you have to do with the fine stones.
>magazines make great test paper
Running the blade down your fingernail is a great way to feel for imperfections
>stropping matters ! But really any piece of leather with any kind of abrasive paste will do. You can literally use toothpaste and a belt.

Nah, kitchen knives always put the edge below your fingies
>>
>>29916600

I don't have a kabar. I do have two kukris - one is a mark 3 (tapered full tang), one is a stick tang.

The stick tang gives it better balance (forward balance is good for a kukri) - it's the sort of thing that doesn't look particularly important on paper, but when you get it in your hand, the difference is immediately felt.

>>29916627
Sounds more like tha kind of kukri the Gurkhas used to chop off heads up to, and including, WWI. Many held up fine to this day. Guess what that says about durability.

The black handled one is 45 on Amazon. It's a great hunting knife . It's NOT a survival knife . Hallow ground, so it's not great for heavy cutting tasks, it's got a stick tang I believe ? Not a full tang.

The sheath is good , and it holds an edge well. It makes a great knife to cut and pierce flesh. Would make a good fighting knife too. But not a woods knife .

The steel is stainless, easy to sharpen easy to blunt. And yes hollow ground, it's for cutting flesh and that's about it. A hunting knife

>>29926068
its pure truth. the only true victories a blade offers in a knife fight are attacks to the face throat or tendons. outside of that, a knife has no stopping power, which is infinitly more important in cqc, as annoying someone to death can be done with anything. your skills as a combatant are the most important, and a knife in a true combatants hands offers him little more benefit than a stick or a pen. minus against armor. chances are, you will never get into a brawl and have the knife contribute to your victory. you either have a knife and deterred the fight in the first place, or the brawl is midway and the knife offers only marginal contribution to your ability to keep living

a knifes highest value in a melee is as a deterrent, and not a killing weapon

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the whole scaring someone off thing. Seriously. Why in the fuck would you whip out a knife just to threaten someone and let them know you're armed ? If you're going to use a knife on someone, you draw it once you Are within arms reAch , and then slash across their face / neck to get them to raise their hands and possible hit the jugular, then pump your fucking arm like a piston at their heart while chest is unguarded . You might miss the first one . Or the second. But within a second you will score at least a hit or two. And then you fucking run. And they bleed out either chasing you or lying in a pool of blood. Seriously.

Create a situation where their eyes are shut and their chest is open , and then stab for the heart. It's fucking scary just how fast this can be done.
>>
>>29926203
defusing a situation is always the preferred option. an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Dunno what I'm looking at.

I wanted a lightweight spork for backpacking and maybe something that was also pleasing to look at. The American Kami one fits the bill, except in the pictures I couldn't tell how huge the bowl was on the spoon part. I can barely fit it in my mouth. It's bigger than a soup spoon, it's approaching fucking ladle size. I would grind it down but then I'd ruin the anodizing, which is one of the reasons why I got it in the first place.

Seriously, I don't know if I'm supposed to use it from the sides or what, but if I actually used it to eat a meal the corners of my mouth would get torn up from using it.

What do you mean safe queen? Look at the thing. I use it constantly. I've never had an issue with it and it holds an edge like mad. Why do you want to shit post about how shitty my knife supposedly is?

it's a keychain sharpening stone, and it's shotty. would work in a pinch for putting on a rough edge, but its just a steel plate with abrasive sloppily applied to one side. the back is smooth, the edges are undressed, and sharp as hell.

there is no such thing as a shitty knife, only shitty operators. my complaint was with shitter operators buying spoonfeeding knives then buying a new one every time the old one lost an edge. i was talking about you not knowing what a patina was while owning an nth cost blade, when someone that should be interested in a blade of that quality shouldve exhausted effort in knowing what it means to own a blade of quality in the first place

dave canterbury sells one of the most popular 200+ price point knives on the market, and he constantly talks about how one of his favorite and most used knives is a 3 dollar yard sale knife, because he knows the properties of a good knife and how to use and care for them

yes those cheap high grit diamond plates are way too aggressive to use on a blade that just needs a touchup. i would sooner consider them for turning a piece of sheet metal into a blade before putting my knife edge to it. bringing edges to blades can be done with almost anything once you get familiar with it. although using leather for a strop is really creme de la creme. nylon textile can be used as a strop if it doesnt have much give, but the nylon wears out pretty quickly if you do that. one of the benefits of a leather sheath is its modularity as a strop

So basically you have to be a knife snob to buy a quality blade. I bought it because I liked it, heard from multiple sources that they were good (and they are), and because I wanted it. Rest assured that I take good care of it.

snob, no. it takes all of a day to learn all the theoretical properties of knives. practice using and maintaining a knife, or any tool, is not the sign of a snob
