There are very few chemical units in the army, you will most likely be attached to a battalion (I'm aviation). How likely is it that I can switch my asfc to EOD Tech after I get my licensing? How soon can I get licensed? I'm doing this so I can work with the airlines when I get out, which is my main goal, but I'd love to learn EOD to help people.
>>
>>29912995

You're allowed the possibility to retrain after three years if I remember correctly.

Good luck with that, it doesn't happen often. Good luck with finding an aircraft mech job upon separation as well; they pay shitty and unless you live in socal or texas you aren't going to be finding a job.
>>
>>29913089
>3 years

I thought it was 2, but 3 sounds more familiar. How do they really expect you to do this, though? By the time you're done training, you don't have too much time to do your job anyway.

I guess I could give it a shot.

No
>>
>>29913180

You have to sign another service obligation when your approval to retrain comes through. They aren't going to train you for two jobs and then just let you go.

>>29913214

>can you walk into a recruiting depot without calling beforehand?

Depends on the current fpcon. The short answer is no with a "but..."

>do you have to be in weight requirements when you see a recruiter?

No
>>
>>29913214
>>can you walk into a recruiting depot without calling beforehand?
Kek, there was some veteran (maybe, he could have just been a psycho) who patrolled the outside of my recruiter's office after that Muslim in Tennessee shot up the recruiting office. Waving Gadsden flags and shit, the offices got shut down after that to anyone who didn't make an appointment.

Just call before, desu
>>

Any possibility of getting deployed to Afghanistan as an aircraft mechanic or avionics guy, or is that just Turkey?

Where's the most dangerous place they could send me in that job? Recruiter told me it's impossible they'd send me to Afghanistan, but I don't trust him.
>>
>>29913450
What branch? Army crew chiefs definitely go to Afghanistan and on my last tour we lost a bunch of guys.
>>
>>29913456
Air Force. I'd actually want to go to Afghanistan, or one of the more dangerous areas over there for a short while. They told me my biggest possibility is a base just inside the Turkey-Syria border.
>>
>>29913450
And I'm sorry about your loss, man.
>>
>>29913456
Sorry, wrong reply.
>>29913503
>>
>>29913288

So, having worked for Lockheed, being a current acqdemo, and still having access to internal postings I can say that no, there are no entry level positions.

I'd also like to say that I didn't even imply that there were, I feel that was pretty explicit. I see the aircraft they work with on a daily basis at the socal plants and I am telling you the obvious truth that some of what enlisted military work on are the same things that they're looking for mechanics to fill slots.

My point is that there are tens of thousands of people across the country going for like six jobs at any given time. So again I'll say good luck with that.

I'm giving myself till Friday, then I'm going to stretch extremely well, walk a mile, stretch again, and try to jog half a mile at maybe 50%. if it hurts for a second at all, I'll be laid up until I ship so that I can be 100% when I get there
>>
>>29913987
Hope you're feeling better, why not just call it off until you're sure? Or is it too late?

Not that guy, but "calling it off" isn't as easy as it sounds. If you're medically unfit to ship they can push your date back, but that can mean losing your job, bonus, or enlistment options. It could also mean six more months of sitting around w/ no job.

Anyone here 38B (Civil Affairs Specialist) or know anything about it?
>>
>>29916238
If you know it's an immediate DQ and want to get in, just lie. Lie, lie, and lie.
If if you want to tell your recruiter. He'll do one of three things.

1.) Tell you to lie about it
2.) Tell you you shouldn't join in the first place.
An odd third option.) he's never heard of it and can't find any info about it. Usually with this one he'll actually send some info to the doc because he doesn't want to be responsible if you die.

But do mention any broken bones/stitches/other small shit. That's easy to get past.
>>
>>29916664
My college recruiter sent us a spam email about it. I guess it's in demand or he wouldn't have singled it out. I don't know if this is anymore than the general description, but here's what we were sent:

Civil Affairs

Secure the Victory

Civil Affairs Soldiers are the field commander's link to the civil authorities in his area of operations. With specialists in every area of the government, they can assist a host government meet its people's needs and maintain a stable and viable civil administration.

Civil Affairs units help military commanders by working with civil authorities and civilian populations in the commander's area of operations to lessen the impact of military operations on them during peace, contingency operations and declared war. Civil Affairs forces support activities of both conventional and special operations forces, and are capable of assisting and supporting the civil administration in the area of operations.

Civil Affairs specialists can quickly and systematically identify critical requirements needed by local citizens in war or disaster situations. They can also locate civil resources to support military operations, help minimize civilian interference with operations, support national assistance activities, plan and execute non-combatant evacuation, support counter-drug operations, and establish and maintain liaison or dialogue with civilian aid agencies and civilian commercial and private organizations.

>>29916676
Here's the thing, it shouldn't be an immediate DQ or even need a waiver. It's ADHD, but I have not taken meds or been inhibited by it in almost a decade where everything I've found says 1 year off is enough.

Joining the army.

My father was cool with it when I told him I wasn't going for infantry, a little proud even.

My mother cried and told me the Army is for idiots who can't make it into the other branches. I explained I got an 85 on the asvab and what that meant and she screamed "Then why are you joining the army!?" She's cool with it now. Still hurts I know she isn't happy with me.
>>
>>29917019

Joining the Air Force. Dad was Air Force. Their perspective on it was mixed. I suspect that since my dad was an enlisted he doesn't want me to outrank him by virtue of commissioning.
>>
>>29917130
And it's weird, my mom is vehemently anti-gun and anti-military as far as I know she has no real experience with the military. I don't know where she got that from.
>>
>>29916975
Absolutely, but the less of an issue I can convince the recruiter it is, the more willingly he'll go to bat for me (ie. getting a waiver) IF needed.

When I told my mother about enlisting, she gave me a look as if I was suicidal. When I actually enlisted . . . and eventually deployed, she acted as if I was about to get killed. When I told her that I only signed up for 35N, and that I would only be working with computers, she wouldn't believe me. She thought that "Intelligence" meant going on black ops like James Bond, and taking part in deep cover missions. It took me a long time to convince her that I was working with a bunch of nerds, in a dark office, and that I didn't even carry a gun. Even then, she thought I was covering something up.

It's a mother's job to worry.

Expect 80/20

80% of the time, you won't be doing your job. You'll be doing clerical, administrative work. Aside from that you'll be chain smoking with the other nerds, playing video games or Magic the Gathering. I did a lot of weight lifting at that time. 20% you'll be doing the actual work that you signed up for. It's pretty cool, and you'll find out why soon enough!

I'm out now, and if you want a parting thought I'd say that I do not regret my time spent. 35N is an MOS that translates very well into the civvie world. Your time spent with technology, your military experience, your security clearance, and a degree (if you already have one) makes you a hard candidate to turn down. No, you won't be guaranteed a job outright. That never happens. BUT you will be guaranteed interviews. You'll have them lined up for days, son. Make sure you take advantage of the Army's career placement programs.

There wasn't for general BMT as of 2004. Only if you decide to volunteer for the AFSOC track will watersports ever be involved in AF BMT.

Not the OP, bu jumping on this question...

>How do I into P/J? Is it a contract? Or do I have to jump through hoops?
>>
>>29922576
Three ways.

One is contracted pipeline like most other AFSCs.

Second is during the week 2/3ish AFSOC call. They take volunteers out of BMT flights temporarily and you take a ghetto PAST test en mass with other hopefuls. I tried it, passed everything until the water portion wiped me. Had the distance swim down, but during the water recovery portion (jump in with uniform/boots on) I panicked and grabbed the side of the pool. Was sent back to my BMT flight and told to work on it and try again during my retrain window.

Third is retrain after hitting active duty. Washout rate/fail to qual rate is very high for all three.

It's important to remember a couple of things when considering a job in the military.

1) Your recruiter once held a job, and most likely will return to it after he's been a recruiter long enough to have forgotten all but the most rudimentary elements. Outside of that job, he might know a little bit about some things from what he's gleaned from friends and, you know, being a sentient being, but he doesn't know for himself because he's never walked those shoes.
2) They're on the recruiter train. While he once again might have a friend or several friends who are spread across the army, a recruiter doesn't know shit about who is deploying where, except that he's not going to deploy anytime soon.

>>29910767

I would presume some are wearing different color jerseys. They used to make us wear them when we took PT tests. Color signified platoon we were in, with the numbers being easier for many of the drills who weren't our platoon's assigned drills to remember us.
They really only made us dump out our shit like once, to make sure we didn't "lose" anything or bring in contraband. If you're getting lay outs all the time, it's because someone's fucking you over, and it's probably not the drill's fault. You might get your shit fucked up if you leave the locker open, for example, or if you leave your shit so that you can just pull the lock and have it open (always rotate the dial after you resecure it).
Running and pushups and shit starts when you get off the bus with a little welcoming session. Then you go do basic drill blocks on how to do movements like, for example, half right face. People who fuck it up will result in you getting fucked up. Not sounding off, same shit. Don't even have to be loud, just gotta sound like there's something behind it.
If you're not keeping up? The army does ability group runs at basic, so you're not necessarily running with your platoon. You're running with people roughly your speed. If you're not able to run an 8 min/mile indefinitely for about 5 miles, well, you can work on that before you get to basic. Shit's too easy. If you fail your graduation 50/50/50 PT test, you'll be a holdover in pork chop platoon (I forget its actual name).
It depends on how fucked up you are and your platoon and your company. My company was red phase the entire time, but a handful of prior service guys and the guys coming from military colleges and the guys who, in general, weren't fuck ups didn't get fucked up or fucked around with by the drills and we got a lot of time on our own.
You'll need socks, a watch, and other basic shit. I don't know what you've got on your list.
>>
>>29910767
do recruiters make money off of getting people to join, like how a car salesman makes commission for selling a car?
>>
>>29925047
what does that mean? days are divided into 8 hours instead of 6? seems like more work
>>
>>29918976
But yeah, I would go with a hybrid. Make sure you can fit anything you might have to stow into a bag, though.

When I went through, we had to wear the running shoes at the PX. If you're not a fuckin' retard, you should be able to "sneak" around the drill that tells you if you pronate or underpronate and what you need based on your arches and all that shit and get shoes that fit and are comfortable, unless they're out.

For boots, remember that you don't want to slide in that shit, that they'll break in and expand very slightly, and to change your socks.

I wouldn't worry about aftershave bro, unless you've got really sensitive skin. Ain't nobody going to smell you there. Can't answer about the ace bandage. People got butthurt about shoe inserts when we first got there, but once again if you're not a retard you should be fine. I also don't remember about footpowder, but I wouldn't recommend footpowder if there's a dichotomy between footpowder and body powder - and when you're packing a ruck, there is because you're measuring out weight versus utility.

You can get a degree for almost any technical AIT through partnerships that the military has with local community colleges, especially members of the Servicemember Opportunity College network for whatever branch you choose. Many of them take the DSST and CLEP tests, which are like the Collegeboard SATs for a specific subject or the AP test. They're largely multiple choice. If you do a week's worth of studying and are a relatively aware of the world kind of person, you're able to pass just about any of the subjects with relative ease and get your college credit for free. When the test results come back, they'll be uploaded into your JST - joint services transcript - which you can then get for free instead of having to pay the people who make the DSST and CLEP tests to pull your records and send them off to whatever college - once again, provided they take those two tests. With 'em, you can knock out a not-insignificant amount of credits for your general education courses and electives.

Lol. Whoever told you 18x was easy to get into was probably also tried to get you to crawl under the desk for an oral inspection bro. It's not easy. Never will be easy.

However, if someone meets the initial physical requirements for 18X and shows even a passing interest the recruiter might ("might", not always) try to steer them towards it. I don't know if 18x has a signing bonus anymore. I'm pretty sure 11x doesn't have one (but that's no surprise). Of you're recruiter is a sick and out for himself he's gonna watch your testing scores very carefully and find the most obscure job with the highest signing bonus and recruitment commission possible to get his cut. That's one of the reasons everyone says to know what you want when you talk to them.

They had me go to a giant PX-run shoe store. There was a drill there who judged people's arches and told them what type of shoe they needed. You walk through the store and grab the box yourself. The drill isn't going to remember or GAF so long as you're not standing there idly or trying on every damned shoe in the store.

PSYOPS is psychological warfare and everything that goes with it. If you get in you might do stuff like building profiles on known terrorists or enemy leaders for intelligence. Figure out what makes them tick so they can get cornered and hit where it hurts them most. Or....

You might assist with "knowledge bombing", meaning assisting with making sure pamphlets and propaganda get sent to areas where Uncle Sam needs to win hearts and minds. Very, very dull.

HUMINT on the other hand is boots on the ground work. It's interviewing and interaction with local leaders, assets, and informants. Alot of it is backed by the alphabet soup agencies and you're reports (which there's alot of) will usually get carbon copies to one or more of them along with your COC. It's not intelligence work like "J.B." (Bond, Bourne, Bauer pick one) style. But it is a vital part of the Intel chain. Think of it this way: a HUMINT specialist (the status not the rank) might go into a village someplace and sit down with a local low level leader who happened to see something strange. That one tip gets passed along and becomes a puzzle piece to the whereabouts of a weapons supplier. That Intel gets plugged into the rest of the equation and might be just what the CIA needs to call a play and get the fucker snatched from his bed one night by SAD and welcomed into the warm embrace of an interrogator who pokes, prods and wheedles his ass into spilling all he knows about a plot to deliver yellow cake to some very bad customers. See?

MISO/PSYOPS also performs passive intelligence collection.

For people who don't know what that means, it's pretty much exactly as it sounds. A HUMINTer will go and actually ask questions specific to security whereas a PSYOP/MISO guy will be more interested in how people get information and finding key personnel in order to influence the populace.

That said, I've never personally seen a PSYOP dude sit down to "build a profile" on an enemy, because 1) they're passive collectors and 2) they're not BSCTs or attached to the OMT/HOC/2 shop so they have no fuckin' place in it. Personally. Not saying it doesn't happen, but...

Doesn't matter.
There are a couple ways to play it, but the marines are picky right now. If you were going Army, I'd say to tell your recruiter. They are very lenient with offenses right now. The marines, on the other hand, can afford to be more selective. They're way too effective with their PR, and they have a zillion people try to get into a small number of slots.

If you don't want to say the county, then you'll have to look up that specific agency's reporting procedures yourself. You might need to send a request for your records to both the court that processed your whole ordeal as well as the law enforcement agency that arrested you.

What you did does not matter.
What the charge was SPECIFICALLY, word-for-word/letter-for-letter and the reporting procedures for the people that processed you matter. You might be good to go, you might be fucked.

Nothing the judge said matters at all. Even if he ripped all your paperwork in half, burned the building down, and told you you're set for life. The judge doesn't control records. The reason you can lie on future job applications is because normal jobs can't just ask the FBI to pull up whatever they want. Gov jobs are a whole different ballgame.
Of course, all of this advice might not be applicable to you, because I don't know where you were arrested. In some locales, the judge sends the arresting agency a request to destroy their records of you too. In some locales, they have to obey. In others, it's ignored.

That's nice. Now, do you understand that the process is completely different depending on a variety of factors including state and county laws pertaining to records, what clearance level you require, and a million other things?
I got in. Hint hint.

I could look it up.
Or, you know, you could. You have the internet.
>>
>>29928249
I'm guessing you don't have a TS
>>

What branch?
>>
>>29928265
What would I look up exactly? _______ County mandatory reporting laws or something?
Aren't all convictions from when you're a minor supposed to disappear anyways?
>>
>>29928275
No, I do not. But I can answer question regarding getting one under special circumstances.
>>29928286
If you googled that, you would get there eventually.
>Disappear
No.
Well, generally no.
In certain locales, yes. (But not really)
The FBI keeps everything that they receive, and counties have to send copies of shit that happens to the FBI. Whether they do or not, and what their specific procedures are for doing so, depends on...you guessed it, where you were arrested and by who.

Motherfucker, I run the records department at one of the largest police departments in the country. I TEACH A CLASS once a month on inter-agency records transfer that gets nearby county personnel proficient in sending their stuff to the FBI. I got into the army without disclosing certain information, and the Marines use the same goddamn people to look into this stuff. Who the fuck are you?
>>
>>29928527
What did you do to avoid disclosing stuff? Teach me your secrets sempai
>>
>>29928533
I didn't do anything special, I just lucked out on where my "special circumstances" occurred. I knew the local procedures because my father headed the records department before I did, and I was upfront with him about what I wanted to do.

Someone who couldn't, in good conscience, tell these kids to fraudulently enlist. The medical shit, sure, lie away. But you're naive to think that kids going for TS/SCI will have no problems. I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm not going to respond anymore to your shot, but these kids have a right to know both sides

Basically, if the agency that arrested you doesn't send records to the FBI when and how they should, whatever you did nevet happened as far as .gov os concerned.
People think big brother is all knowing.
Big brother is run by a bunch of desk jockeys entering information into computers and hitting send.
It's mostly women and "retired" folk. Shit doesn't work well where people are dumb.
