It's kind of bland, honestly. It's pretty realistic, but not so much that you forgive the plot for being boring. The tension is... inconsistent, I guess? but most of /k/ know how it turns out irl so we might just have been going into it knowing too much.
All the factual, informative, tactical, and insightful stuff from the book is dropped because it's hard to translate to the screen, meaning they had to fill more time with things like "he's totally got a wife" and "COWBOY CULTURE SOUTHERN PRIDE WHOOOOOO."
And a plastic baby.
Not a shit movie, probably worth a netflix viewing, but I regret going to the theater for it.

I know /k/ likes this movie but I couldn't stand it. A lot of this movie was full of cringe for me. The action, the dialogue, and even the gear all looked sort of half baked and cheesy. Emily Blunt's incompetence is really played up in a way that's kinda hard to believe. Benicio del Toro has gotten fat and washed up, he looked like shit the whole movie. All the extras playing Delta guys were kitted out in a way that looked generic and more like generic airshit multicam.
All that Seagal did in the movie was sit in a chair, get winded and mumble.

Maybe a little better than some truspec shit, generic condor vests and airshit non ballistic helmets. You realize there are photos of Delta guys in fucking Burkina Faso rolling with the same shit they wear everywhere: Cryes, JPCs, HK416s, etc.
If they really needed to roll sterile they can get nontagged and unmarked versions of their normal kit direct from manufacturers or more likely they would wear locally procured civilian clothes and locally procured weapons.

Yeah that's the general vibe I got from it too. I guess they were trying to simulate the contrast of solider vs civie life and the constant struggle between waiting and pucker yer butt action but it kind of went all over the place.
Aside from some "shock" scenes (especially the one with the kid and the drill) it kind of simmers and explodes at an odd pace, couldn't really settle down and enjoy it.

as far as movies go it had a piss poor plot, halfassed storytelling and B movie action wth enough MERICA thrown in so rednecks and fair weather patriots would not dare question the movies lack of any coherent watchability. if I had to categorize american sniper it was a USA USA wave the american flag patriotic hugfest circlejerk. there was potential for a good movie maybe even a really powerful movie but it fell completely flat and ended up way overhyped.
I'm trying to remember a film that I saw as a child. It had some American dude being pursued through Eastern Europe (I think, could have been the USSR) by a sniper that looked like Nico Bellic. Eventually the US dude hitches a ride on the back of a pickup with some slavs, one of whom is drinking Coca Cola, and joins some sort of resistance movement. There may have been a scene with an aircraft carrier though that could be from a different film. Sorry for the lack of detail I think I was like 10 when I saw it.

Pilot gets shot down, chased through Slavistan, rescued. I'm not 100 percent on the resistance movement, since he gets picked up by a US task force.

I got ruined by the fact Chris Kyle is dead. His family put huge pressure on eastwood not to disrespect him in any way, so the movie was all hero worship and playing it safe.
Also the plot is just thin and they had to make up a villain that couldn't possibly exist. Maybe it was never a good candidate for a biopic in the first place.
