Hey /k/, I'm looking to get my first handgun. I have a pretty limited knowledge of guns in general despite being around them a lot. I'm learning a little more every day.
With a budget of under $500, I'm looking for something that doesn't require a large amount of knowledge to upkeep and that I can CC when I turn 21. Bonus points for cheap ammo because I will be practicing on the range a LOT.

Makarov was my first pistol.
I had to completely disassemble it to get off the cosmoline (bought mine as unused milsurp) which taught me a lot about the weapon. Unfortunately there's only like one YouTube tutorial that instructs complete disassembly.
I thought it was inaccurate until I bought my glock, now for some reason I've been shooting out the bullseye on targets with my Mak.
Idk what happened but it's definitely an accurate pistol, and easily concealed.
The ammo (9x18) isn't super common, but cabelas carries some good ammo including hollow points and hornady critical defense rounds.
Overall I love my Mak, but I CC my glock because I don't want to put all the wear and tear on my Mak. I just love it too much :,(

Too thick and heavy for a CCW, unless you're wearing super baggy clothes all the time, most holsters will still sag with something like that.
A Mak is heavy too. With ammo my shield is a bit much, drags my holster down, unless I've got it strapped around my sock.

9x18 ammo you can get mountains of off of cheaper than dirt, but just clean your gun really good after each range session.
I'd get a .380 something, as far as stopping power goes they've got moderately better statistics than 9, and overpen much less.
I had read a coroner review of terminal ballistics and after that I've pretty much been sold that the .380 is probably the closest to one size fits all for the average civvie. the only downside are most guns in .380 are all 6+1 - the same as most maks you'll run into unless they're russian originals or remakes of russian originals. Which, from what Ive seen, they run about 1'000 dollars, but I haven't looked since I got out of CA.

I too carry a sp101. I do not agree that you must wear baggy clothing and that it says too much. And in the summer it even carries in a cargo pocket. Very fun gun to use with 38s, and magnums aren't too bad

Glock 19 for me. Pretty light for holding 15+1 rounds of 9mm, and I carry a 17rd G17 mag on me a well. Might be a bit excessive for some, but dindus often travel in packs...
