No, plenty of time for activities. Modern subs have wi-fi so you can play your favorite games for months. The NEET dream.

My dad was on subs till about '98 or so but most were from the 60's or 70's. He can't say much about them but they didn't sound absolutely terrible like ww2 ones were. The schedule sounded awful though, they were based on 18 hour days. 6 hours rest, 6 hours whatever your rate is, then 6 hours of generic duty. I think they moved onto an 8 hour shift recently though.

>>
I currently serve on subs. There's no internet, no pools, no sauna, we have gym equipment scattered throughout the ship, but no gym. You work constantly underway, sometimes staying up 24 hours straight just to get 3 hours down. Even in port days off are rare. I can't wait until my contract is up. Worst mistake of my life.

>>
>>29880663
That is unless you're a coner, they work 6 hours then sleep/jerk off/watch movies for 12 hours and then complain about how hard their job is. Fucking faggots.
>>
>>29880663
But now you get to feel superior to surface ship saliors
>>
>>29880688

What's a coner, sonar operator?
>>
>>29880663
But how much are you getting paid m8?
>>
>>29880689
Not really feel superior. I have friends on surface ships, and its more jealousy. Their workforce is larger, individual workload smaller, work less in general, and get to go outside. Im sure the grass is greener on the other side. One of the best feelings in the world is when you get off the sub after your first underway.

We call everyone forward of the engine room a coner, but generally anyone who works in the cone of the ship. Sonar, FT's, Nav ET's, Radio, ect.
>>
>>29880279
I worked as a Marine Engineer on Trafalgar class boats, living conditions on modern boats are not too bad but the 6 hours on 6 hours off shifts really take some getting used to. Then you also have drills and exercises that cut into your rest and admin time, it gets pretty draining real fast.
>>
>>29880724

Ok, so why aren't you a coner?
>>
>>29880739
Not much call for civilian sonar operators.
>>
>>29880704
That's the only saving grace of this job. I have a house and two vehicles, quite a few nice guns, and no problem paying the bills. I mean I still have to manage my money, I'm not stupid rich or anything, but I grew up pretty poor so the navy did get me out of that situation

Barbell, a pair of dumbbells, pull-up bar and wall bars is pretty much all you need.

Except you are bodybuilding, but that's not really what soldiers should be doing.

That swimming pool is fucking awful though, no disagreeing here.

My buddy was a nuke tech and said that they would get in stapler fights so they would feel something because the low oxygen made them loopy.

He also said the first time he got on a sub two guys stared directly into his eyes with their docks out and raced to see who could cum first.

The rx has. Nothing to do with water or air. We get water from either steam distillation or reverse osmosis and we get fresh air with a snorkel. Neither of which require fission.

1 Name a typhoon that can go to sea right now. 2 Calling those facilities a gym or a sauna is a stretch, 3 it's not hell but when your oxygen generator is broken and yor O2 levers are at 17%. It sucks mad cock, 4 due frequent modern naval inspections most of that free time is spent drilling, cleaning, or waxing decks to look pretty, 5 Submariners decided that subs have to be hard and have created a culture of abuse and hazing to new guys and when big navy cracked down on that guys who hadn't been in Subs long enough to have been treated like in the olden days constantly harass new Sailors giving bull shit back in my day stories on how hard things were for them and how it should go back to the old way.

I have no problem with my division. We do all kinds of cool shit together. And for the most part the rest of the quarters knows about my personal life. I'm a fully tattooed relatively young for my rank single guy who plays a shit ton of vidya and all sorts of what you'd expect for a guy browsing k. In fact I even tripfag around from time to time due to some of my other esoteric hobbies (suck as collecting antique furniture.) However, giving out enough links to connect me to my boat on /k/ is just a bad idea. Most Bros, especially on k are cool. The smallish k meetings I've done etc. All good. But all it takes is one buttblasted NEET with a lot of free time to end up calling easily obtainable public numbers and start silly Bullshit that will go nowhere, but would be a pain in my ass.
A few years back during an edc thread someone csi enhanced a reflection of my issued cc permit and posted s my full name. That was the day I quit being so cavalier on the internets.

these are the rumors i've heard but which is to blame alcohol or sauna?
>>
>>29880911
You must be thinking about steam baths.

Those are like 40°C. Sauna is over 80°C.
>>
>>29880649
No, it's a steam collapse.

Hot water creates steam -> container is emptied, steam remains -> door is closed -> as container cools, steam condenses to 1/50th of original size -> collapse

Yes. I know. I've been breathing it for 16 years.

However electrolytic oxygen generation is not a function of nuclear fission.

Also. That's not fresh air. It's stored oxygen. Fresh air is just that. Air. The only way we get fresh air is from ventilation from the atmosphere.

What exactly does the atmosphere contain in a sub? You can use electricity to make hydrogen and oxygen, sure, but that can't be it. I've been wondering for some time...
1) Pure oxygen would be dangerous as fuck (obviously there will be some CO2), so do they add something like nitrogen? Where would they get anything they add? (I can't imagine it's practical to carry the amount of nitrogen needed)
2)Where does the hydrogen go?
3)Where does the carbon dioxide go? I know there are substances that can absorb it, but they can only absorb a certain amount right?

is the food on subs still as based as everyone says?
why don't they get MREs like every other fucker?
also, how does shitting work.
does it just dump your black and grey water into the ocean?
is it a giant portapotty? an airplane toilet?
>>
>>29883289
>is the food on subs still as based as everyone says?
No, the fresh food runs out quickly then you are down to the dried, frozen and canned foods. Submariner chefs receive exactly the same trade training as their surface counterparts.
>>
>>29882622
>>What exactly does the atmosphere contain in a sub? You can use electricity to make hydrogen and oxygen, sure, but that can't be it. I've been wondering for some time

Our Atmosphere is just that, atmosphere. Generally we opt to ventilate, either with low pressure blowers (giant electric fan) or the diesel, which only serves to create a suction to draw fresh air in through the snorkel mast.

>>1) Pure oxygen would be dangerous as fuck (obviously there will be some CO2), so do they add something like nitrogen? Where would they get anything they add? (I can't imagine it's practical to carry the amount of nitrogen needed)

We store O2 in banks. they are pure O2, and it is dangerous. if oxygen levels get low, we bleed O2 into the boat from those banks for as long as needed to raise O2 back to the correct levels. We shoot fro 19%. Normal sea level O2 is around 23%. This is done as additional preemptive fire suppression.

>>2)Where does the hydrogen go?
Hydrogen goes overboard. This is a problem with the current EOG systems. They aren't very quiet. One of the more noticeable transients is the hydrogen overboard. So we try our best to limit the use of the system whenever possible.

>>3)Where does the carbon dioxide go? I know there are substances that can absorb it, but they can only absorb a certain amount right?

'C02 is dealt with in various ways, chemical scrubbing is going on pretty much 24/7. This uses mono-ethanol
amine as a catalyst to We also have burners, which are essentially giant catalytic converters.

The other factor that's a real pain in the ass to deal with is pressure. Pressure is often our limiting factor. If you're doing an O2 bleed, that's great. but your raising pressure. Which in turn throws the atmospheres out of wack. To add to this we are nearly constantly running high pressure air compressors, a ton of system rely on high pressure air, so that's drawing a vacuum on the ship. it's a balancing act. cont?

We get extra food rations. it works essentially like this: you get X amount of dollars per head per meal. the rate differs, breakfast is like 3.20 and lunch is like 4.75, whatever, I'm not a cook. That rate is set across the navy. So an e-1 to e-9 is set for X per meal. However, we get like an extra 7 bucks a day per head on subs. This is due to the lack of fresh we are allowed. Once your store of milk, veggies, etc is gone, it's gone. So we have to take more expensive frozen and dehydrated stuff. This leads to our cooks being allowed to do some interesting things if they care. (most don't) So it's pretty common for ribeye and lobster tails on sunday nights. At least it is on my boat. things like that. So, when our food is good, it's great and often better than the average meal. But, that gets tempered with us eating fucking garbage 80% of the time.
>>
So where does poop go on a submarine? Is it like space where it gets ejected?
>>
>>29883595
neat.
so on subs, is the doctor aboard also certified for mental health? is there a guy for that?
I'd imagine being trapped in a tin can a mile under the ocean for months at a time will fuck with someone, and you don't want them to snap.
>>
>>29883621
I feel like if they don't hack it, the solution is to weed them out quickly rather than do field treatment.
>>
>>29883618
>So where does poop go on a submarine? Is it like space where it gets ejected?

Collected in tanks, some for grey water, some for CHT. And when possible pumped or blown overboard. Same as our trash. We collect trash, smash it into small cans with 3000lbs hydraulics and poop it out the bottom.

>>29883621
We have no doctor. Just one shit ass enlisted corpsman. e-6 or above. And they aren't there for us. his primary duty is radhealth administration. You do not want to get sick on a submarine. You're shit out of luck. And we all kind of pitch in on mental health. Like I talked about before, I'm one of the young and "hip" guys in the chief's quarters. I pull a lot of hugger duty.

>>29883664
Yes, we do our best to get rid of them early.
This is the reason our qual process is so hard. It used to be much harder. Its also why we used to haze so hard. If you can't handle me stapling your nutsack to your thigh, you can't handle a fire at 750 feet.

This is where all the gay submariner jokes come from. If you freak out if a dude mouth kisses you during a game of gay-chicken, I don't want you to be the guy responsible for not freaking out when something actually serious is happening.
>>
>>29882819
more specifically 3 people share 2 racks. the 2 senior people get their own bed and 2/3 of the storage in that rack. the third guy, the floater, sleeps in which ever rack is empty at the time and keep his shit in 1/3 of both racks.
>>
>>29883721
that's fucking great.
but what the hell is radhealth?
so I know flank speed is basically redlining a submarine and that you can't do it for a long time or shit goes wrong, but what would constitute going flank?
being chased by an ASW ship or something?
>>
>>29883791
>but what the hell is radhealth?
Radiation health. In the British Royal Navy the Medical Technicians aboard are responsible for testing the air and water quality as well as monitoring of the dosimeters every crewman should be wearing. They will also check the boat for radiation hot spots.

>>
>>29880542

>>
>>29883791
Radiation health. IT's the program that monitors our levels of radiation. Which are significantly lower than what you get just during your daily life. We were more anal than you can imagine about it, for no good reason.

>>29883818
On US boat these are two different people. the Doc manages the TLD (personal dosimeter) and we have a division of Nuke chemists to track water chemicals, and manage radiation / spills.
Flank is just full speed. we do it plenty. AFAIK the actual speed is classified, but I also know it's easily searchable. I just won't say what it is, even though it may be public knowledge I try to maintain as much opsec as possible.

But no, we run around at flank as often as we need to. It is an immediate reaction to some scenarios. But it's primarily used if we need to haul ass to transit from one area to another.

And being chased by ASW slower is often better. We aren't going to outrun them, but jthey can't shoot what they can't find. (this isn't always true)
