I'd just go higher caliber due to the 10 round limit. A big selling point of 9mm is the firepower, with that assfucked in CA, it'd but a bit stupid to still go for 9mm unless you really really can't handle the recoil.
Unless you're going subcompact with true 10 rd mags anyways, ala CZ RAMI or HK P2000sk (both on the retarded ca roster)

That's more due to the it's heavier weight (all metal), pronounced grip angle + beaver tail, and confined slide.
That said,
The factory hammer spring is on the heavier side, not helpful by the smaller slide real estate, making slide manipulation something to get used to.
The trigger is hit/miss, you'll need to polish some stuff or get after market trigger if you don't want to dry-fire or put ammo through it to soften it up the long way.
Sights are painted on dots.
Internals isn't pretty and the smaller stuff, pins and shit, are not really easy to get out or in.
That said, for a $500-600 metal handgun, it's definitely a working duty gun.
Unless you want to put a lot of effort and money into making it a looker.

Fellow kalifornian here. Was in the same boat you are a few years back. Long story short, try 4-5 out at the range. I went with the mindset of buying a S&W M&P or Springfield XD and walked out with a PX4 because I had tighter groupings. No regrets since.
