Just to clarify I want a rifle that is good for home defense, that I can easily hike/camp with where its size and weight isn't gonna be a huge problem, and that I can easily fit into a small car. Being able to mount a flashlight is also what I want but I know all railed ARs can do that.

Carbine gas *is* shit. 14.5 is okay if you get whichever MD you intend to stick with until you shoot out the barrel pinned to it, but if you even think you might maybe eventually want to change MD's, a 16" is better since you don't have to pin it.
14.5 mid-gas is a thing, but only through a couple companies that can be trusted. Otherwise, a 16" mid-gas is pretty much the de-facto ideal at the moment.

Depending on barrel profile and handguard style, a middy is actually a few ounces lighter. You have more "skinny" barrel behind the gas block journal and less "fat" barrel ahead of it.
Carbine gas is less pleasant to shoot and harder on the rifle, though generally not enough harder to worry about. The biggest issue is the increased felt recoil (higher bolt velocity) and more muzzle climb. A middy just shoots softer, making follow up shots faster and hopefully more accurate.

Well then, don't buy a complete JP rifle. They use a true match chamber, which is honestly probably too tight for an autoloading rifle. It's very accurate but I can't get through a full fucking mag without a FTE, and get a stuck case once every ~200 rounds with factory ammo when the extractor rips either through the rim or rips the rim off. I have to use small-base bushing reloading dies with it.
