There are few things to consider:
1) Water transfers energy better than air, explosions are very dangerous underwater.
2) A generic hand grenade does not rely on explosive power to kill - it relies on fragmentation. Underwater, the small fragments would stop very quickly and whatever amount of explosive a hand grenade has probably does not have a very large kill radius.
3) Whale brain is behind a HUGE wall of flesh and bone. There's a very good chance that the grenade would wound it and blind it...but not kill it outright.
To be fairly honest I could probably blow up a blue whale straight to his suicide Beach with my Demi God /fit/sts.
