It's actually a sand base and some "dark earth that I'm pretty sure is just brown" lining. The camera is making it crazy bright. I'll have to do an outdoor picture eventually.

Original grip was slick and I hated it. I put some texture tape (basically boxing wrap with adhesive on one side, like you can put on weights) on it. It looks kinda dumb where it bunches up, but it has a slight tack to it and I can swing the rifle around like crazy even with one hand and my grip never changes. Especially with gloves on. No real recoil issue with .223 but it does give just a little bit of padding that makes it way more comfortable to hold.

I used rustoleum, and if you let it cure for a loooooong fucking time it's pretty durable as long as you're not deliberately trying to scratch it. Dura would probably work better, honestly, but I'm lazy and wasn't really doing it for anything other than shits.
Either way, it's worked pretty good so far, as you can see from the pics. That's been about six months, some range trips, and what I'd call 'moderate handling use' but nothing real serious.
