PA compact prism scopes. 3x VS 5x, they're identical with the exception of their magnification. Which do you think would be better for central Texas plains area?

>inb4 ACOG, Elcan, Strike Eagle barrage
>>
>>29835772
Get both and mount them on opposite 45 degree mounts, with an aimpoint in the center.
>>
>>29835772

I plan on getting a 3X one. But that's because I don't want to go above 4x. I think anything more than that and it reduces speed for closer in engagements.

If you plan on doing a lot of long range type stuff? Yeah maybe the 5x, maybe a 1-6. I dunno. It's your rifle.

Perfectly fine. If you add in their P&W service, the extended A2 FH, drop-in handguards, and BCG (which pretty much eaqutes to a complete upper assembly minus a rear BUIS and chargins handle), it's $572. You can get a M4 lower assembly off PSA for $150, so you're only at $720 at that point. Spend $20 on a milspec charging handle and get a surplus KAC 600m rear BUIS off Jewbay for ~$70, and you'll be right at around $800.

You could shave $60 off that by getting the bolt and CH seperate. Assuming you are still going for PSA deals here.

Typically their "premium" deals are what include the BCG and CH. As long as the barrel is melonated/phosphated/whatever jerks you off; you'll be good to go.

That was literally the only quilt in the house at that time when everything else had been packed up and shipped over to Vermont. When that pic was taken, it was on an air mattress in the middle of a completely empty room.
>current quilt

The zipties can take a lot of heat, you just make sure they aren't actually touching the barrel. For guns where fullretard may be a real possibility, it's best to probably make it so the securing catches are outside of the handguard, as those are the weakpoints of the tie. The pressure switch doesn't slip out if you tighten the ties properly.
>>
>>29835974

I'm a Californian prisoner of pro-2a proportions. Personally, I love me some slavshit and wet the bed every night about some day owning a Saiga. However, last night the thought occurred to me that the "featureless" look isn't specific just to AK -- but is probably more attainable through the AR platform! Regardless of favoritism, I think some AR's look sick as fuck (like those Vietnam style ones with the carrying handles and long, triangular front grip) and wouldn't mind having the best of both worlds some day.

With a long preamble aside, my question for you ARG fags is: how the fuck do I go about trynna get a featureless AR without having to that monsterman grip or whatever? I'm real bad at explaining and provided a picture for what I'm trying to get across. Is there any sort of buttstock that fulfills idea?

Also, where do I get started in general? Thanks bois

Yeah, I wound up buying this upper for my new project because I decided that unless I was going to pay out for CHF, that the meloniting was what I needed, and that I wouldn't be getting anything more until I made the jump to CHF.

I'm going to trim the A2 front sight, remove the handguard cap, remove the delta ring, and then I can drop in my Fortis rail.

If you are planning to some day move to a free state, I would get a nice 16" upper that you like. That way once you arrive at your final destination, you can get a new lower, sell the SCR to a friend who is still trapper, and have a nice AR.

All the real money in an AR goes into the upper. This is an exception because you need a snowflakey lower.

They are high quality for sure. But is it the lower that you really want?

If so then whatever. Enjoy the rifle. If not, in a free state you can put a regular lower together for like..$150.

I am considering going back to a pinned FSB. Weigh in your opinions?

My reasoning being that if for some reason the worst nightmare (or greatest fantasy?) comes to pass and shit has hit the fan requiring average joes like us to use our rifles in combat situations where other people will be shooting at us I feel like it makes more sense to have that heavy solid FSB then some flip up that could get fucked up by a stray round. Not so much concerned about the rear irons because if something happens that close to my face that my rear sight might get fucked up, I probably have bigger concerns.

Is this dumb? How do you guys feel about pinned FSB?
>>
>>29837082
Your reasoning is a bit dumb, considering one of your concerns is having your FSB survive getting shot. That being said it sounds like you just want an excuse to use a FSB, which is cool because FSB's can be aestheic af

It is more solid than a rail mounted system, but the scenario just seems extremely unlikely. Also consider that a round striking the FSB can also affect the barrel it's pinned to, whereas a round striking the front sight on a FF rail may not.

The situation in its entirety is very unlikely, and I've honestly never considered such a thing.

>>
>>29837268
I have only recently started considering it.

There are other things besides stray rounds too like bumping into shit, debris flying through the air, shrapnel etc etc. It just seems like in a really shitty situation the risk of damaging an FSB is less than the risk of damaging some after market rail mounted iron sight.

But I honestly don't know how true that is. In the army our rifles all had pinned FSB's obviously so I never had an opportunity to test. Not that I really would have wanted to be in a firefight testing the durability of different sights.... But the point is I don't really know. Thats why I am asking because I need other peoples input.

Let's proceed under the assumption that waiting 3/4 of a year for NDS to send you your upper and lower doesn't exactly sound appealing.

We'll start out with the upper;

This can be had, if you're patient, by browsing Gunbroker and waiting for one to pop up that isn't stupidly overpriced. Failing this, you can order an NDS one from Brownells, without the 8 month wait. The caveat is that, for some reason, the Brownells NDS receivers are all in A2 black. For an additional $80, you can have it shipped over to John Norrell to be refinished in a proper A1 color. The color you want is Grayish-Black Flat.
Upper; http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/receivers/upper-receivers/ar-15-m16-a1-upper-receiver-prod83620.aspx

Refinishing; http://www.johnnorrellarms.com/refinishing.asp
Lower;
Here you have two routes. The aforementioned Brownells, coupled with the refinishing, or, if you want to save some money, a reprofiled A2 lower from McKay Enterprises.

To trim an A2 FSB.

I also need a dremel, but there should be one in the garage somewhere. If worse comes to worst I could use a cutoff wheel and a polish wheel on that. It will just be a little more tedious.

The question is whether I can get off the handguard retaining cap without having to actually remove the A2 FSB. Which would be optimal. Because fuck taper pins.

I do plan on removing the gas tube for all of this though, as that is the most fragile part of the system.

We have your receiver sets. The hard part is over. Now what? Next step is, obviously, the barrel. You have a multitude of options for this part, as a 20" pencil profile isn't exactly hard to find. For the sake of easiness, I suggest the offering from AR15sport, as it comes with the FSB and triangular handguard retainer installed.
http://shop.ar15sport.ihoststores.com/productinfo_v3.aspx?productid=BARREL-20LWT12

Up next; the parts for securing that barrel to the upper. Again, this can be all found from AR15sport.com. You can get the standard slipring components, just make sure that the slipring itself is the flat, A1 style seen here;

It's a valid concern but I would disagree. I would rather damage a rail or rail mounted front sight than a FSB; those parts are more easily replaced and don't actually effect the function of a rifle. I don't think you'll ever see a test involving sights getting shot, and I would recommend a compromise by getting a fixed front sight for a FF rail. DD and Troy make some, and they're supposedly quite robust, without having to forgo rail options to accommodate a FSB.

>>29837413
The rail is an older URX 3.0. URX II's and older SR25 rails also had the integrated front sight. It's honestly more of an aestheic appeal thing than anything else, it's not that great of a front sight when flipped up.

I just ordered a new upper to replace the upper on my other lower.

The best upper for the price was a PSA middy. I also got a Fortis rail that clamps to the GI barrel nut.

So really I just remove a bunch of scrap metal.

Still cheaper than buying a middy upper with an M-LOK rail I like from the start.

Furniture time. Again, plenty of places to choose from, but non specialize in A1 furniture like USCollectorsOrdnance on GB. Here, you can look through individual furniture components and pick what you want. This, however, is a pretty good set; http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=555789547

For the BCG, any milspec will do, as its design has been unchanged for 50 years and was introduced with the A1. Take your pick here, honestly.

The flash hider is easy to find, but you want to make sure it comes with the correct split washer. A lot of the "A1" split washers you see online are for too thick and are modern reproductions. So, let's go with APEX's offering; http://www.apexgunparts.com/ar15-m16/colt-ar15-m16a1-flash-suppressor-cage-w-lock-washer-vg-to-ex.html

Probably.

The upper gets here tomorrow, but the order from my rail hasn't even processed yet. So I won't even start cutting it yet. Plus I need to order a front sight, and stock, and not shitty charging handle, and an endplate with a QD socket from Primary Arms too.

Has any one ordered from Red Barn Armory before? I ordered my rail from them Monday night and the order is still processing.

Buffer tube get. As with the BCG, pick any buffer assembly that's rifle length and milspec. It will come with a spacer meant for A2 stocks, but you have the based A1 stock, so what do you need that shit for?

All the big stuff is out of the way, time for the itty bitty. Any milspec FCG will do, so, once more, take your pic. The bolt catch also just has to be your basic milspec, along with the takedown pins and their detends. I'd suggest PSA for these things.

The forward assists needs to be the earlier teardrop style. A couple months ago these were everywhere and were even being newly produced by Bushmaster and DPMS. For some reason, they've stopped, and they're not as common. Thank fuck for the secondary market, though; http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=556458990

Just couple this with a basic FA spring and rollpin, and she's good to go.

Hell yeah, I was thinking a play on model designations like M4A4gery, because of the definitely M4-ish lower but then the upper is more like a short M16A4 than an M4gery. That's why I got the KAC rail panels and VFG, hell even the MI quad rail kind of looks like a KAC RAS.

Your magrelease assembly can be milspec, so no worries there. Ditto for the trigger guard. I would suggest you get them from Nodak, as they had both in XM Gray, but that's apparently not the case anymore, so just stick with the typical offering. Maybe spray them dark gray or something.

The charging handle, however, is still offered from NDS, and can be had on their website. No backorder either, and it should match your refinished upper perfectly.

Charging handle; http://www.nodakspud.com/AR%20Lowers.htm

The rearsight assembly is a bit of a hassle. Like the teardrop FA, this has become hard to find online despite the fact they were produced until very recently and discontinued for some reason. Apparently this model train site (no joke) has them though; https://www.amherst-depot.com/Gunparts.AR15.htm

So what's left? Only the dust cover and firing selector, right? Two small components, couldn't be that expensive. And yet, it's here that so many retro builders screw up. The A1 will have a distinct selector switch and dust cover, but many opt for just slapping on A2-style ones and calling it a day. You can avoid this, fortunately. A1 firing selectors, with their flatm notchless surface, are still available and also let you flip over to the giggle mode position (though you can't actually fire your A1 when it's flipped that way, not even in semi).

Selector switch; http://www.apexgunparts.com/ar15-m16/colt-m16a1-safety-selector-lever-good-to-very-good.html

Now, the dust cover would normally be a hard find. But, I'm here, and I can tell you that the boys at RifleSupply.com have new production A1 dust cover assemblies for all of $15.

>>
>>29837909
Um not sure how you want it quantified. It feels sturdy inside, like the metal in it is thicker than I'm used to. The rubber sleeve surrounding it feels soft, almost stretchy, if you pinch it between you thumb and index finger and shift your fingers back and forth you can get the rubber sleeve to slide around a bit. The wire doesn't feel like a Surefire's, but is thick with rubber, I think a Surefire's is reinforced with wire mesh though. Where the wire meets the base that attaches to the flashlight body it has a bit of a gap, I think it is intentional for flex and give. I'm just going to zip tie it real well, if I don't like it I can always swap the tail cap back on. Maybe get a drop down mount and activate it with my weak hand thumb.

Does that help?

Anywho, there you go, how to into A1 component acquisition, step by step. A couple years ago you could have just gotten a parts kit, with barrel, for about $400 and slapped it all on an A2 lower while you waited for NDS to send you your A1 lower in 3-4 months. Unfortunately, the parts kits are almost entirely gone, and what's left is usually worn to hell, without a barrel, and costs about $600-$700. NDS' backorder log has apparently doubled since then as well, but at least there's the Brownells workaround, even thought it'll need to be refinished.

Building an A1 now can be daunting, but it's still quite doable.

Muh not really an AR yet AR. Lower is currently 700 miles away at other place antd too lazy to get it.
I nicknamed it shekels because every part was bought at sales/gunshows for super cheap so long as they weren't low quality shit.
Personally I don't think I'm doing that bad for a poorfag first AR. I mostly spend $$$ on antique guns.
>>
>>29838885
Kinda stupid to go for the Vortex RDs when the MD-ADS exists. That said, I'll take a Vortex variable power scope over a PA one.
>>
>>29838908
Probably.
Hopefully The plebs don't kill the servers.
>>
Best low power scope for AR under $350 or so? It's between the Leupold VX-1 or something and the Nikon M223 currently.
>>
>>29838937
I was a cunt hair away from going over the edge on buying a Leupold VX-2 1-4x20 for my carbine, but instead opted for a Colt 3x20 for my A1 build. I didn't look into the VX-1 that much, but the VX-2 was really appealing.
>>
>>29838929
I see what you mean, but I like the cantilever mount and the overall design. That MD-ADS looks like the Bushnell trs-25
>>
>>29838977
>That MD-ADS looks like the Bushnell trs-25

It looks more like a H-1, the TRS-25 has its battery compartment at that retarded offset angle.

Great thing about the MD-ADS, aside from the 50k hour battery life and durability, is it's compatible with anything meant for Aimpoint's red dot line.

Who's your favorite hero to play so far?
I've really liked Pharah.
Other heroes are fun too, but I feel like I'm most effective as Pharah.

>>

11.5 because why not
>>
>>29839172
8.5" achieves full powder burn with most commercial loads. If you're gonna handload subs, 8" will fully burn H110/W296 and AA1680.

I think 8.5" is a good middle ground especially if you're gonna mount a can. Gives enough handguard to shoot comfortably if you're not putting a can under it while being short enough even a long/heavy can isn't unwieldy.

>>
>>29839215
I'm not into hand loading yet but I will be using factory subsonic loads, I've read that 1:8 twist can have issue with the heavier sub loads. Is this true in your experience?
>>
>>29839254
Not an issue unless you're trying to load 240+gr bullets at under 1000fps. I've got 2 barrels, a 1:7 button rifled, and a 1:8.5 polygonal rifled. Both shoot my 245gr NOE's just fine, but those are cast. Haven't tried loading any 240gr Matchkings yet because they're expensive.
