Glad I took a 300-level history course on the Vietnam War taught by a very based military historian.
The short version is that most soldiers had to *volunteer* to go to Vietnam. The draftees were generally sent to safe Cold War-era bases elsewhere (keep in mind Vietnam was considered a very small backwater compared to the larger Cold War against the Soviet Union)
Also keep in mind with such a huge military, volunteering for Vietnam was a way to get ones proverbial ticket punched to a promotion and better career path. Thats why the stints only lasted a year--they had so many officers wanting to go through.
In my own family, my oldest brother went into USAF ROTC, while the other draftable brother is bona fide absolute no-kidding around fucking RETARD.
