SKS Thread

Here is my rig. I didn't want to fuck with it too much like you see bubbas do trying to make an AK out of it.

It came with an aftermarket apeture sight that does wonders for it's accuracy compared to one's I've shot with standard rear sights. It also came with an aftermarket walnut stock with no spring-loaded butt cleaning kit.

I picked up an HS butt pouch which stores the cleaning kit- not as compact as the original issue but probably superior in terms of what's in it. It also keeps an extra 5 rounds.

On the other side is an ALICE ammo pouch clipped into the strap loop on the butt. I managed to squeeze 4 clips into it. So when loaded the rig carries a good cleaning kit and 55 rounds of ammo in and on the fun ready to go. Its heavy but nothing I can't deal with.

Why do people buy SKS rifles as anything but collectibles?
>>
>>29818549
heh. might as well, unless you wanna stick slim jims in ithem.
>>
>>29818555
I bought a Yugo back when they were cheap. Plus they feel better to shoot than an AK. I wouldn't recommend getting one now due to the prices though.

What is the best route to take for mounting optics and what should I buy for something that can do 1x-4x. I have never fucked with optic or sights before so explain like babby's first time.
>>
>>29818613
I paid about 330 for this one including tax.
>>
>>29818664
Use the irons. An SKS probably isn't gonna be accurate enough to warrant a scope.
>>
>>29818687
Not terrible. Is it Chinese?
>>
>>29818713
Yeah, Norinco. Under 150 yards its actually one of the more accurate semiautos I've shot. To the limits of the cartridge that is. My first range test I could get all ten shots in a 6-7 inch group a about 100 yards prone using sandbags. That aftermarket teksight really seems to help the accuracy- though complicates teardowns. Its a ton of fun to shoot.
>>
>>29818888
meh- ok closer to 9 inches- but it was surprising.
>>
>>29818888
>>29818918
Nice. That's a pleasant surprise when it comes to Norincos. Good for you.

What's the serial and factory on yours?
Looks close to my /22\

Also the hunting stock cover thing really doesn't fit the fung shui, you can at least hook a full stripper clip to those elastic loops.
>>
is getting one of those detachable steel AK-like mags for muh SKS faggot-tier?

Can you use stripper clips on them?
>>
>>29818699

And yet people put optics and scoped on AKs all the time. Fuck you, anybody have a real answer?

I'm hoping someone will answer your question, I got a Yugo SKS and there's no mounting rail for a scope

Molot makes a decent scope mount for it.

Is 489.99 a good price for a unissued/unfired Yugo SKS guys?
>>
>>29825298
Better off getting an AK at that price m8.

Unless you're in a ban state or something. Then that would probably be the running price for one.

I tend to think of them as $400 guns, max.
>>
>>29825314
Sure its a pretty high price for a yugo
but definitely don't buy an AK at that price

I'd take any SKS over a sub-$500 AK

probably not, usually rimfires are exempt from those laws
>>

Chink stripper clips (nonmilsurp ones, anyway) generally suck.

I sucked it up and bought a shitload of Czech VZ58 clips from a Czech guy on ebay. Make my money back selling the ones I didn't need.
>>
>>29822814
There is, bro.

Especially with Chinese guns because their milsurp guns are some of the best SKSs you can buy while their commercial export guns are super hit or miss but tend to be pretty bad.

My /26\ shoots 3" at 100 when I'm prone, for instance.
>>

Bush gun. Abuse the fuck outta it and buy a new russian for 200
>>
I made a thread for this, but I didn't know another SKS general was up. So here:

I need advice.

These two pawn shops in my area have Russian SKSs. The one in the first shop has been bubba'd a little but I think it's salvageable; it has a ventilated handguard, spike bayonet, the takedown pin was modified to accept a scope mount, the bore has no pitting and the lands and grooves are strong but the mirror shine is gone.

Is it worth it for me to try and rescue the gun? Or should I just find another SKS?

On another note, the other pawn shop has a nice Tula 1949 for $750. How much should I offer them?
>>
>>29829629
Not THAT much.
And that's Cairo light as Bubba work goes. I'd hit them if They were under 450.
>>
>>29829708
Well what's the average price of a Tula SKS? I hear on here that to not pay more than $600.

Also, what does Cairo light mean? and they want $395 for that one.

Well fuck it's been sitting for day without cleaning. I had to get a punch to get the piston out of the tube. Do I need to put lube on it after I'm done?
>>

you either need a new tube or a new rod.
>>
>>29830324

I ran cleaner though it and it came out black and now it looks clean. Took a wire brush to the piston and it looks fine now too. Gonna run a wire brush through the tube an put patches through it and it should be fine.

>>29830429

yeah I got that shit cleaned real good. works fine now.

>>
I know youre supposed to clean after every range day, but I keep seeing people claim theyve never cleaned their SKS since its such a conscript weapon, how true is this?

would it be more important just for yugos since they dont have chromed barrel?
>>
>>29831451
That's how slamfires happen. I say always clean the bore and bolt, everything else you should at least wipe down. Mine almost feels lubed by the carbon after a few clips.
>>
>>29818543
Any one know what sks' are legal in CA?
>>
>>29831451
You don't need to.
Conscript weapon.
You do need to. Conscript weapon.

Some sks's are prone to biting your thumb when loaded, or even firing a round from time to time.

Some have good safeties, some are NOT drop safe or even rough activity safe.

Some were built shit, many were issued to conscripts and militia who didn't care-for years or decades-and are serviceable, but badly worn out.

My sks is in pristine condition with virtually no wear-It came over in the 80's, and saw two owners who didn't shoot it much. and doesn't appear to have ever seen any use before that.

I trust it and feel ok with not detail cleaning it after a short session. It's also not my innawoods or home defense gun.

For most, fucking clean it. Yours may be a fine rifle made to spec and in perfect condition.

Or, maybe it was built by a semi-literate moron, issued, beaten up a little, imported, broke, got a replacement part of a different nationality that isn't built to quite the same spec by ANOTHER moron, then got bubba fucked, and then restored by a different fudd, then owned by a stupid college kid, and THEN got into your hands.

Making it a temperamental bitch that is sick of Americans, with a desire only to either be cleaned, or jam, slam fire, and bite you.

Just fucking clean it. It's safer for you, and safer for those around you.

So this is probably the best place to ask, but i recently bought a 1949 tula for 500 at a local funstore, it was my first purchase of a firearm, and i bought it because i like russian guns and nice semiautos. Did i do gud? Also i live in commiefornia so my options werent exactly plentiful

So in the last thread or whatever some anon suggested that for cleaning the bore after shooting corrosive ammo you should soak a patch with Hoppe's No. 9 and line the bore with it, then plug both ends of the barrel with soaked patches and let it sit for a couple hours

I did that, and then ran a dry patch through, and it came out like this. Is this normal? I ran a few more through and they came out totally clean. I looked down the bore and it was spotless. Perfect, even.

I'm just wondering about the color of this patch, really.

gonna crosspost on /akg/ for more info
