If in large quantities or correctly placed, then yes. but for the average joe minimum range time home defender, a .45 or 12g or even 9mm is a far better choice. Takes the guesswork out of placement and lethality. You just aim center mass and pull the trigger until the nigger is gone.

well look at it like this
a 22 is small, yes it will kill a man if placed right like any other bullet.
but, it has less surface area so less chance hitting something vital center mass
where as a 9 or 45 hp mushroom out and have a much larger chance of hitting something major like a large artery
also a 9/45 will leave a bigger hole in organs thus a lower recovery chance where as a 22lr will rarely mushroom out like other common pistol calibers

I'd personally recommend 380 acp for someone who doesn't actively train with their weapon. I mean, it essentially does the same job as 9mm, but with zero recoil.
You CAN defend yourself with 22lr, but you either need to be cool enough under pressure to shoot someone in the head with it, or you need to be ready to turn them into Swiss cheese. My dad was shot with a 22lr in the back once (this was during the civil rights movement, and to make a long story short, some Malcolm x types didn't like him being in "their park") and he thought it was a bee sting until he put his hand to the wound and noticed that it came back bloody.
Besides, if you're hell-bent on using 22, just use 22 mag. Unless you're a Brit, in which case, see earlier comment about Swiss cheese.

This is a fair point. If you're able to put 10 rounds of 22lr into someone, it will get the job done. I think the general consensus is that a larger caliber is just more efficient, which is preferred. But if you're in a situation where you have to defend yourself with 22lr, then by all means, go for it
