Does an observation/scout Helicopter do anything besides get blown up?
Also why do anti-submarine Helicopters exist? Do they actually work?
Feels like leftover roles from the 80s.
How does this thing act as an anti-submarine tool?
Yes
They exist because jobs

Okay, because for the life of me I can't imagine any of this shit being useful in a real war. Especially cost wise compared to other options.

Most observation helicopters are armed. During Desert Storm, OH-58 Kiowa helicopters were armed with a mix of a 70mm rocket pod or a rack with two Hellfire missiles and a .50 caliber M2 machine gun mounted on fuselage.
These Kiowas often made their own kills in addition to guiding and spotting for Apaches and Cobras and came to be called Black Death by the Iraqis.

Good thing we're getting rid of them then, right?

Army is getting rid of them because Kiowa pilots scare the shit out of them.
There's just something about that airframe that turns normal rotary-wing pilots into blood-crazed slayers of men who jack off furiously while they get shot down.
