tbqh i think /k/ has some of the best discussion on 4chan. It's just about things that not a lot of people find accessible. usually the quality of conversation goes up with the obscurity of the topic.

It really pleases me that the "serious" arts are discussed on 4chan as much as genitalia. It's a reversion to the way we've discussed art as a people through much of history and society: drunken, unfettered, occasionally brawling, and only occasionally producing useful insight.
It's not really any less insight than from more formal channels, and its a hell of a lot more entertaining in the mean time.
As composition goes, I find /k/ to be one of the best writing boards actually. That's why I like the skinwalker threads here. Sure it's /x/, but if I want to be spooked, I want a good story. All /x/ is going to give me is taxonomy with no foundation for creatures I don't believe exist, and they'll do it so blandly I could swear I was studying for some kind of a ghostbusting exam.
In general, /k/commandos are good storytellers. Greentext and prose alike.

There was chemistry and stuff, and people in construction industry talking about where to source low calcium fly ash, and other stuff. It was pretty amazing.
